Foreword

I first met Pastor Shaun Marler when he was 19 years of age. I was leading Christian Outreach Centre. He received the baptism of the Holy Spirit that night.

Pastor Shaun began living in a new dimension of Spirit life, as I did when I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

This experience lifts each of us into a new realm of life, where miracles happen, where you are empowered by God to do the works of Christ. I believe through the scriptures and personal experience that it is essential to receive this experience.

I came from being a stockman in the Northern Territory, on a million acre property which was remote and came south to manage another property. I went to a Billy Graham crusade meeting where I gave my life to Christ.

The salvation experience was beyond life transforming to me. Like millions of other people, it was the start of my spiritual walk not the climax. It was a long journey and I gradually learned to find my spiritual feet as it were. If you find it difficult to maintain a life in the Spirit, don’t give up, and as you learn from the bible and others, your life settles into a spiritual rhythm, the Holy Spirit carries you when you cannot carry yourself. I have seen large numbers of people come to Christ and thousands of people healed by the power of the Holy Spirit of all types of sickness and disease. In the beginning, the healings were just enough to keep me going on the journey of the Spirit-led life.

I saw a man moving in the gift of the word of knowledge. I watched with awe as God revealed hidden things about the man and as he prayed, the man was healed. It was an amazing night and continued for some hours. As I watched, a great hunger to see the Holy Spirit work through my life was more than birthed in me I was consumed with this longing to help people with all sorts of sickness, disease and problems.

You cannot do these things in your human ability, you have to know God is in you, that you can rely on Him to flow through you and heal or deliver as the person needs.

It is when you stand before large or small numbers of people and you know that you in your humanity cannot supply what they need. Only God can do that. It is then you feel your utter lack and I knew that I had to rely absolutely on the Holy Spirit.

For one year I longed for the Holy Spirit to move through me and I think I fasted more than I ate that year. I wanted to see God move more than I wanted food. I found that fasting made me more sensitive to the things of the Spirit. By the end of the year my spirit was sensitised to the Holy Spirit and I could hear Him speak with clarity.

In this book, Pastor Shaun covers the subject of fasting thoroughly. Both scripturally and he tells the story of many of the greats in church history. You will be brought to a point of decision, what will I do with this biblical subject of fasting?

To me the great benefit, of fasting is that:

You put seeking Gods will above your human need for food. It demonstrates your desire for the things of God more than your daily bread.

You become sensitised to the still whisper of God within.

Your spirit gains ascendency and you are more open to the realm of the spirit.

I trust that as you read this book, it will bring you to your need for a closer walk with God. If so, your life will be richer, more satisfying, an inner peace will pervade you and any price you paid will be as nothing to all you have gained.

May God open the eyes of your spirit as you read this book.

Introduction

This book is not for every Believer, though every Believer should read this book. This book is written for the Believer who desires to see and live in God’s miracle power and the Revival Life! The Believer who desires more of God’s power, more of God’s goodness, more of God’s presence.

It is for the Believer who is sick and tired, of being sick and tired and broke. The one who wants to experience the reality of God and His power found in the Bible. This book contains the secret to the fast way, to that power!

The purpose of fasting is not to lose weight. The purpose is to seek the face of God, to draw closer to Him and to have a revelation of His will for your life. As you do this, you will find many other benefits. You will find the anointing and power of God moving in your life, you will see the yokes of bondage broken, and your health restored.

Fasting and prayer are the keys to a mature, rich and rewarding life in the Spirit, and fulfilment in your life as you walk with God.

If you want what God has, you have to be willing to do a little self denying.

Noah died to self. For 120 years he built a boat all because God told him to. (Genesis 6).

Paul became the Apostle to the Gentiles, but before this happened, he first had to die to self. We read that he went into the desert for three years alone with God.

Charles Finney carried an unusual anointing. As he approached the outskirts of a town, we read that nearly the whole town would fall on their knees to repent. Why did God use him above others of his day? Because he had died to self.

Smith Wigglesworth was used to perform many miracles. It is stated that he raised 29 people from the dead. Why did God use this man? Because he had died to self.

If we again look at the life of Charles Finney we will see what he has to say on this subject of dying to self, he says: Thoroughly examine the state of your heart and see where you are. Check to see if you are walking with God every day or with the devil.

We must examine our life

Does known sin exist?

Have we dealt with the sin in our lives?

What controls our lives, is it God, or is it flesh?

Examine your love for God

What is the first love of your life?

How much time do you spend in prayer every day?

What place does God’s Word hold in your life?

Prayer and fasting were part of the daily life of Jesus. We are instructed in the Word to follow the example that He has set. Jesus said His disciples would fast often.

There are some people who study history, while others make it. I want to be part of the latter group.
