Preface
The purpose of this thesaurus is to put many similar Greek words at the user’s disposal under each entry in order to do word studies, to help find lost synonyms for a Greek word, and for reinforcing vocabulary. There are approximately 5,150 words and expressions found here. By having words with similar meanings grouped together, the user will see that learning those words is more within their grasp.
Collections of related Greek words and their definitions are organized in a way that enables more thorough word analyses. For example, searching the word purify
will give you the most common words that mean to cleanse, wash,
such as καθαρίζω, νίπτω, and λούω, and lesser synonyms like ἁγνίζω and πλύνω, along with many of their noun and adjective forms. That’s not all. You also get compounds with prepositional prefixes, such as ἐκκαθαίρω and ἀπολούομαι, other related adjectives, like ἄσπιλος, spotless,
and ἄμωμος, without blemish,
words associated more exclusively with spiritual purification: βαπτίζω (dip) and ῥαντίζω (sprinkle), words for wipe away
(ἐξαλείφω and ἀπομάσσομαι), and more. And as you use this book, you will find that it helps to significantly develop your Greek vocabulary and improve Greek comprehension.
At the end of the thesaurus is an English word index, followed by a Greek word index, enabling the user to easily locate words in either language. So the thesaurus can also be used to simply look up a Greek word and find its English meaning or browse English words and view Greek equivalents.
Another useful feature of this thesaurus, is that in addition to lists of synonyms, there are sets of words related by category, like animals
or monetary terms
or numbers.
Readers will find this most helpful to compare and contrast related words. So, for example, exhaustive lists of sins and virtues are compiled under vices and virtues. A complete collection of prepositions is conveniently listed under prepositions
with definitions grouped by case of the noun they modify, but you will also find some prepositions grouped under other headings such as location
or time.
Where there are a lot of prepositions with the same meaning, there is a separate heading for that meaning, for example, the heading By
has a list of six prepositions: ὑπό, παρά, διά, ἐν, ἀπό, and ἐπί. There are also full lists of conjuctions and words indicating result or purpose.
In some instances, antonyms are included under a heading. For example, under Explain, Interpret
(ἑρμηνεύω in Greek) you also find στρεβλόω, to misinterpret or pervert,
as the last entry. But in cases where there are numerous antonyms, often a separate heading is created for them. However, in a number of entries, two opposite words are put in the heading, e.g., hot, cold, or rough, smooth, with the expectation that scholars researching that subject matter will want to learn and compare words that are opposites.
As in most greek dictionaries, the lexeme for a verb is given in its present active indicative first person singular (PAI1S) form, but the definition is stated in the infinitive form, often omitting to,
for example: ἐπιτρέπω let, permit, allow
Many Greek dictionaries provide with nouns the nominative singular ending, the genetive singular ending, and the nominative singular definite article, as: ὠτίον, oυ, τό ear. This dictionary doesn’t provide that, due to the understanding that users will already be using as their primary dictionary a standard Greek to English lexicon which will be their main source for that kind of information, whereas this thesaurus is an additional, more specialized resource, even though it can also serve simply as a Greek to English dictionary.
Where the lexeme ending could be either a noun or adjective ending, adjective meanings are often included together with the corresponding noun meaning under the same entry, e.g., ἅγιος has in its definition both noun meanings: saint, sanctuary,
and adjective meanings: holy, dedicated, set apart,
based on the expectation that the user will be able to readily distinguish between them.
In some cases, idioms or colloquialisms are given as both a metaphrase equivalent and a paraphrase meaning. For example, ποιέω τὸ ἱκανόν, to make sufficient, to satisfy or please someone.
The Greek phrase literally translates as to make sufficient,
but when this expression is used in Mark 15:15, it means Pilate wishes to satisfy
the Jewish mob by releasing to them the murderer Barabas instead of the sinless Jesus.
Where a word has a very similar-looking word that it could easily be confused with, that word often will be listed below it, so the reader may compare and differentiate them, e.g., οὗ, where
is listed below οὔ, no
for the purpose of comparison, not because they are related in meaning. You will find together πού, somewhere, approximately
and ποῦ, where? at what place?,
saving the curious reader the trouble of looking it up. The word ἀργός, which means idle,
is followed by ἄργυρος, silver,
for this same reason. In another place, ἤρεμος quiet, peaceful
is followed by ἔρημος deserted, lonely,
so the user can see the subtle difference.
In some cases, where the reader would need to look up a word elsewhere in order to know the meaning of the current entry in question, that word is provided there, e.g., εἰ τύχοι perhaps
has below it the definition for τυγχάνω, to happen
which makes it more clear why it means that, saving the reader from having to search it. Other examples are ψωμίον morsel
listed below ψωμίζω to feed,
and ἠχέω make a noise
found following κατηχέω teach, instruct, inform, tell.
Sometimes in this dictionary there may be additional words that fill out a nexus of meaning in another place other than where the reader is looking, e.g., for words found under more,
one may find additional similar words under extremely
or abundance.
Another example is law
and command,
where they could have been combined under one heading, but there was enough of a distinction in meaning that it was thought reasonable to separate them into two headings and putting see also . . .
to connect them. Many words are difficult to categorize. Words for catch, trap
may be found under Capture, Trap, Surround,
Hunt, Trap, Catch, Snare,
Seize, Arrest,
and Vices: Deception.
It should be pointed out that for words with multiple meanings, each of the meanings are given, not only the meaning corresponding to that heading under which it is found. So, for example, under Location: Prepositions of,
one finds that the word διά, when used with a genitive, means locationally through.
But the causative meaning, by,
which does not have to do with location, is still included in the definition. It’s assumed that the user will catch on to that.
I wish the Lord’s blessing on you and I pray that this thesaurus will be a help and an encouragement to you as you study Greek.
