RECLAIMING MY EDGES
My black hair, my beautiful black coily hair
Why? Why? So much about my hair do I care?
Why in beauty? Do you think I don’t share?
Every morning in the mirror I stare
Full aware before I boldly declare:
I am reclaiming my edges
Age 7, I cut off every ponytail that I had
I knew immediately I had done something bad
A mortal enemy of my tresses I had made
Barbershop was a game I shouldn’t have played
The love affair with my hair was over quick
Suddenly I was a bald-head chick
In the pit of my stomach I felt sick
For many years, I would have wounds to lick
My punishment was fast, it was super swift
I created this rift and killed the gift
My beauty was now in the eye of the beholder
Suddenly my world was colder
Hours and hours in the beauty parlor getting my hair done
I should have been out having fun
Tortured the whole god dam day
Trying to look a certain way
Tightly pulled braids i could feel my head explode
Dreams of my beauty sold
Fell victim to what i was told
I had way too many perms and ass long weaves
Hair pressure to relieve
New hairstyles to conceive
Failed attempts to deceive
White standard of beauty I tried to achieve
I’m reclaiming me and my lost edges
My hair is no longer a thorn in hedges
Each strand to you I make to new pledges
No more chemicals and fuck that slick look
Cause it’s my strength, my growth and my edges it took
Time for a new story in my look book
Your standard of beauty that myth has been
