Foreword
As a student at Bishop College, I asked the Dean of the Chapel, Dr. Harry S. Wright, a masterful illustrator who always provided the student audience with an attention arresting oratorical video of vivid images, captivating stories, and moving metaphors in his chapel sermons, what was the key to finding illustrations? He replied, I view life through homiletical eyeglasses.
He went on to explain that he had learned from our Savior, the Supreme Storyteller, who lifted lessons from the everyday lives of everyday people to portray the Reign and Rule of God. The inspiring insights of Jesus were taken from the experiences His audience could identify with. His listeners were aware of the dangers of the Jericho Road and immediately could feel the emotions, experiences, and fear of the participants in the parable of the Samaritan who risked so much to do good. The crowd had heard or personally experienced the heartbreak of a child leaving home and engaging in rebellious prodigality. The homiletical eyeglasses of Jesus were at work in the Sermon on the Mount as He encouraged those afflicted with anxiety to behold the birds of the air
and look at the lilies of the field
because God provides for the birds, and even the splendor of Solomon couldn’t match the fly fashions
of the wildflowers. Jesus Christ evidently wore homiletical eyeglasses and brilliantly used illustrations and imagery to reveal who God is and what it means to be a Christ-follower.
The Reverend Doctor Melvin Von Wade, Sr., is a faithful follower of Jesus, and for many years, he has been admired and applauded, copied, and celebrated for his preaching prowess and sermonic artistry. He meticulously crafts sermons that are biblically based, prayer saturated, Christ-centered, and remarkably relevant. He has always been able to reach multiple generations. To use the vernacular of the culture, Wade is a beast
in the pulpit! One of the reasons that he is so powerful in the pulpit is that he can build an argument like a lawyer and illustrate his ideas out of the 20/20 vision of his homiletical eyeglasses.
Like Jesus, he can capture one’s attention with a well-placed story that he narrates with the benefit of a wealthy vocabulary that allows the congregation to see
what he is saying. His illustrations are windows that allow the witness to view the Word and connect that Word so that it lives in and through the witnessing worshipper. To use the language of the late Rev. Manuel L. Scott, Sr., Wade’s preaching is portable; one can package the message, and carry it home
because his illustrations are moving and memorable.
Dr. Wade has gifted us with this book of illustrations. Preachers and public speakers will gratefully use this as an inspiring resource for their sermons and speeches. Some will be blessed to read devotionally these uplifting anecdotes. Even children and young people would be advised to read and be edified by the sagacious lessons that leap from the pages. Some readers will even feel like the saints of old when they heard preachers using illustrations and narrating biblical stories with poetic flair, and like them, you may want to respond, Paint the picture,
or tell the story,
or Don’t ya see!
All will thank God for the imagination and homiletical eyeglasses that Melvin Von Wade, Sr. so faithfully wears.
