    CHAPTER ONE

    Leandra

From the outside, this house looks warm and cozy, but Leandra knew better. The place was built with spruce wood and white cedar wooden decorations put in by Gyro’s grandfather, a point Gyro liked to remind Leandra of all the time. Tall, rounded windows let in plenty of sunlight during the day and moonlight at night. The house was equipped with a small kitchen and two modern bathrooms, something Leandra was thankful for. She could lock herself in hers and leave through the window if Gyro managed to extend his patience after she finished getting ready for the day. The small home was made up with the five bedrooms, a modest dining area, a lounge area, and a cozy storage room. Gyro liked to remind her that the extra bedrooms should be filled with loving children. The thought brought a sour taste to her mouth.

The building was shaped like an L. The second floor was smaller than the first, which allowed for several small balconies on one side of the house where Gyro’s master room resided. This floor had a different style than the floor below, which had confused the hell out of Leandra when she first arrived here. Her parents had died when she was fifteen by a swarm of lemments. Her father, Zen, had tried so hard to save his wife and their baby but all three passed. Leandra was almost a sister, but the universe had other plans for her instead.

Gyro was her father’s friend at the time of his death and took Leandra in as a ward. With a last glance at the stars, she pulled open the door and her hopes were dashed as the scent of musk filled her nose. He was leaning against the cream-colored counter tops. He had pale blue skin and greasy chestnut hair almost fully covering his menacing face. Small brown eyes narrowed on Leandra as she walked inside the house. Freckles were spread across his cheeks and forehead, which seemed to be inviting to almost everyone but her.

Where have you been? he snapped and stormed toward her. His anger was stronger than normal, and she didn’t know why.

I was out. You’re not my father, remember? She glared back, she felt like he was the worst roommate ever. He pulled an envelope out of his pocket and her heart dropped. Bills she’d been saving to pay for the first and last month of rent almost spilled out of the busted envelope. That’s not yours. She reached for it, but he kept it out of reach. His tall stature towered over her and she gulped.

You’re mine, he growled low, and Leandra’s wolf side tightened up inside her mind. Without warning, he grabbed her by the throat and pressed her against the closest wall, cutting off her air. Trying not to think too much, she kneed him in the junk, and he gasped, dropping her in a hot second. She didn’t hesitate as she snatched the money and bolted out of the door.

    Leaving everything behind.

You bitch! he yelled from behind her, and she didn’t look back. No way in hell would she stay now. She’d even stored money in another spot in her room in case he found this stash, but she couldn’t go back for it now. No, she’d be short and would have to be homeless until she could get the funds she needed.

But that was tomorrow’s problem. Right now, she needed to get away from Gyro and fast. She ducked into an alley and kept her feet running fast and hard toward the south. The forest would give her cover to shift and run in her wolf body. She turned a corner and narrowly missed a little girl playing with her doll.

Oops. You good? She checked to make sure she didn’t step on the girl’s fingers.

I’m good. Are you playing tag? She grinned up and Leandra gave the little girl a half smile.

Something like that. Leandra glanced back and her eyes locked with Gyro's from two blocks away. You be safe, sweetheart. Don’t want those lemments to get you. She tightened her grip on the money and continued to run, avoiding the other children playing out late. The schooling didn’t start until late since tomorrow was a holiday to celebrate the new deals Vunzect had brokered.

Stop her! Gyro yelled, but no one paid him attention as she slid into a house with the door open. He ran past and she glanced around the house she’d stepped into. A woman with a swollen belly had her hands on her hips.

Sorry. Leandra put her hands up to show she wasn’t a threat to her or her unborn child. Just can’t go back to him. Her voice shook. The woman nodded and walked past Leandra, scanning the area, then walked back in and closed the door and then the blinds.

Come on. You can get some rest and leave in the morning with a better head start. She offered the couch and Leandra took a breath of relief.

Thank you. But I couldn’t put you in danger. You’re pregnant and I’m sure your mate will be home soon. Leandra couldn’t move from the wall she’d pressed herself against when she hid.

Nonsense, and my mate is sleeping in the other room. I was waiting on my other son to come home. She half smiled and eyed the door. Leandra finally pulled herself away from the door and walked toward the couch to sit. Before she really relaxed, a banging on the door had her jumping to attention.

I can smell you, Gyro yelled through the door. Panic set in once more.

Shit. The pregnant woman hissed and grabbed a can of spray. Without asking, she sprayed Leandra down. It burned her skin, but she didn’t dare make a sound as the banging increased.

What the hell is going on out here? A man with blonde hair and bright blue skin stormed down the hallway toward the two women.

Don’t open it yet, she’s trying to get away and I can smell her fear. The pregnant woman steered Leandra to the back door. Go right and keep that way until you reach the edge of town. I heard the king is visiting, maybe you can stay with them for the night and head out with them. She handed over a blade and Leandra took it.

I doubt the king would want anything to do with me. She gave her a half smile as she secured the blade in her pocket.

You never know, my dear. You’re beautiful, and I even heard a rumor he’s looking for a wife. She winked; this pregnant woman must be a romantic to be day dreaming of Leandra falling in love with the king.

Thank you. She carefully hugged the woman and followed the instructions, heading right as fast as her feet could carry her.
