The TRUTH - F.B.W. Browne
CHAPTER 1
THE TRUTH
Throughout history, the Bible has been translated into hundreds of languages. As a result, God's name has acquired a number of names: The simplest form by which God is referred to in the Old Testament is Elohim. It's likely derived from the same root and points to God as being strong and mighty, able to judge and to strike fear. Elyon refers to lifting up and being glorify. These are, however, not proper names for God, but nicknames man has giving him. Also used for rulers, kings, presidents, and judges. Adonai has a similar context and refers to God as a powerful ruler. Similarly, El Shaddai, pronounced el shad-dY’, this is the best-known of the El
compound names. It means The All-Sufficient One and is usually translated in English Bibles as God Almighty
, YHWH and so on. However, this name, YHWH, is the name Moses was told. YHWH is the principal name in the Old Testament by which God reveals himself and is the most sacred, distinctive, and incommunicable name of God. Based on Lev, 24:16: He that blasphemes the name of YHWH shall surely be put to death
, Hebrews at the time generally avoided the use of YHWH and substituted Adonai or Elohim for it when reading Scripture. The combination of four Hebrew letters to form the ancient Hebrew name of God, YHWH. This name demonstrates YHWH's self-existence and self-sufficiency and is linked to how YHWH described himself to Moses. Which we learn in Hebrew this is called the Tetragrammaton. Tetragrammaton in the Bible. YHWH first appearing in the Bible when YHWH manifests Himself to Moses in the burning bush in (Exodus 3).
In Exodus 3:14, YHWH said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. Now does that make since to you. Of course not, so what makes you think he would tell Moses this. When Moses asked who I am talking to. Then it goes on to say,
This is what you are to say to his people in Egypt: I AM has sent me
.
This I AM is understood to be YHWH and could be translated as something along the lines of Ye He Who He
or He who has created you.
This is why people of English speaking get confused about the word I AM WHO I AM. Because in Hebrew I or am Is Ye or He. Now it is starting to make sense why we say it this way when the bible was translated to English they replaced ye with I and so on.
YHWH
The divine name (called the Tetragrammaton, or Four Letters
) has always been understood to contain fearsome power. The misuse of the name could bring destruction on its speaker and others, so the rabbis who pointed the Hebrew Bible were following the believed that where YHWH was seen, ‘Adonai (itself a majestic plural of ‘adon, with a 1st person suffix: =my Lord
) was spoken. The vowels of Yahweh are actually the vowels of ‘Adonai. Because of this, the word itself gives no indication of actual pronunciation. This problem is compounded because of a Jewish taboo on speaking YHWH's name. Which goes back to the substituted Adonai or Elohim for it when reading Scripture. However, In Exodus 6:3, when Moses first spoke with God, God said, I used to appear to Abraham, Isaac, and Iacob as El Shaddai, but I did not make myself known to them by my name YHWH.
In the English language this was omitted. In the English bible it was written like this. (Exodus 3:13-15): Moses said to God, Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?
God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I have sent me to you.’ God also said to Moses,
Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob has sent me to you. This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation. You can tell that we were robbed by his real name because of Jewish tradition. The origin of the taboo is uncertain, perhaps fear of taking His name in vain. The most likely pronunciation is YHWH, pronounced
