What is epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin, also known as a polyepoxide is a liquid material that can be mixed with a hardener to form a thermosetting polymer.
This thermosetting polymer will undergo a chemical reaction when exposed to 50°F - 60°F and it will harden progressively until it becomes solid. This process is called curing.
A good way to start working with epoxy resin is to make sure that the temperature in your workshop or the space where you will be working is preferably above 60°F. This is so you can avoid any temperature problems during the curing process.
Epoxy resin is most commonly known for its adhesive properties. There are numerous commercial adhesive brands that sell epoxy-based adhesives for a wide variety of applications.
It is also great for insulation, epoxy resins are widely used as insulation material in electronic and electrical projects.
Additionally, epoxy resin is a fantastic sealer and great for coating. Making it the ideal solution to protect objects from rusting or harsh conditions. The product used to do this is called epoxy paint or coating and it is usually applied in several coats to maximize the protection.
Epoxy flooring
One of the newest applications of epoxy resin is flooring. In this manual we won’t dive into all the details of this specific application but in the future there will be other courses where we focus on epoxy flooring.
Epoxy resin can be used to coat floors and make them resistant to high levels of wear and tear. Apart from its high durability, epoxy flooring is also customizable and can be a great option to create a decorative surface.
Some of the advantages of epoxy flooring are: great appearance, long-lasting durability and a low cost when compared to other floor alternatives.
Without a doubt, the application we are most interested in is epoxy resin art. This is where we will find river tables and many other fun projects, but first let’s get to know a little more of
