Introduction
Hello, and thanks for joining me. My name is Dawn Reeby, and this is Think Like a Leader, a course from Scribd Coach.
I’d like to start the course by sharing a personal story. When I worked for the Department of Education years ago, my department’s job was to make sure the entire state complied with the federal reporting regulations. We wrote policies that supported children’s learning and growth.
One day, a new mid-level employee, who wasn’t a supervisor at the time, asked me to lunch. A few others joined us, and what impressed me was how she introduced everyone by their names. She didn’t use titles like This is the janitor
and That’s the director
. Instead, she called everyone her friend.
Now, the reason I shared this story is to point out a very important leadership lesson: we are all real people with a mission bigger than our job title. She didn’t minimize or maximize anyone’s role because all leaders know that titles have nothing to do with leadership. Leadership is about making people feel of value.
The lesson I learned that day is one that led to me developing this course. We’re going to cover what it means to be a leader and how different it is from simply supervising others. There are three major questions that will be answered in each unit of this course.
The first unit’s question is, What are the fundamental characteristics of being a leader, and do you see yourself as a leader?
The second unit will answer, How do leaders think, and how can you shift your mindset to be a leader?
And in the last unit, we ask, What do leaders do?
So, I’m sure you want to know what makes me qualified to talk to you about leadership? Well, to give you a little background information about me, I have more than twenty-two years of experience in certified training and development, integration, and growth of data-driven strategies. I am also the CEO of Excellence in Analytics and a lifelong learner.
Becoming a great leader does not happen overnight. Change comes
