About this ebook
Get the Summary of Walter Isaacson's The Code Breaker in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book. Original book introduction: Driven by a passion to understand how nature works and to turn discoveries into inventions, she would help to make what the book’s author, James Watson, told her was the most important biological advance since his co-discovery of the structure of DNA. She and her collaborators turned a curiosity of nature into an invention that will transform the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as CRISPR, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions.
The development of CRISPR and the race to create vaccines for coronavirus will hasten our transition to the next great innovation revolution. The past half-century has been a digital age, based on the microchip, computer, and internet. Now we are entering a life-science revolution. Children who study digital coding will be joined by those who study genetic code.

Summary of Walter Isaacson's The Code Breaker - IRB Media
Insights from Chapter 1
#1
After her parents moved from Washington, DC, to Hilo, Hawaii, Jennifer Doudna had a rough childhood trying to fit in. This pushed her to focus on science and books.
#2
Amid the rich natural environment of Hawaii, Doudna was most fascinated by the sleeping grass,
which curls its fern-like leaves whenever touched.
#3
One day after coming back from school, Doudna found James Watson’s The Double Helix on her bed, placed there by her father. After reading about the discovery of DNA, she realized that she wanted to be a scientist.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
Watson’s work was in part inspired by English naturalist Charles Darwin, who conducted multiple researches in the nineteenth century to figure out the mechanism that allowed traits to be transmitted across multiple generations.
#2
After collecting carcasses of what he thought were different birds, Darwin was surprised to later discover they actually all were different species of finches.
#3
For many years, Darwin was too afraid to publish his theory of natural selection, thinking that it was too heretical for its time.
Insights from Chapter 3
