    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Book Introduction

Hello, and welcome to The Self Publishing Toolbox. In this book, I will outline some of the tips and strategies that have worked for me to become a self-published author. I will share with you some of the tools I've used that have made the process substantially easier than when I first started. I will also consolidate a lot of the information, which I found in various places on the internet, that has helped me become a more effective author. I hope that after reading this book, you will have a great start with your self-publishing business, and that the tools I give you, will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

To become a successful author, will require you to develop a great deal of patience and persistence. Publishing and selling content online is not a get-rich-overnight scheme, but it does represent a long-term opportunity. You will need to consistently produce high-quality content over a long period of time. Over time, you can make a good income by doing this. For this to happen, you will have to develop work habits that will allow you to become self-motivated and to have consistent production. Unfortunately, if you hope to only write one book and expect that it will become a best-seller, the odds are against you. Rather, the formula for success is to regularly produce content and build an audience over a long period of time. This will require you to be able to produce content on a regular, predictable basis.

    1.2 Why Become a Writer?

Of course it's why you want to become a writer - because you have the liberty to do that, but once you have the liberty you also have the obligation to do it.

    Tobias Wolff

If your only goal in writing is to make money, then I think you’ll probably be disappointed by this venture. Making money as an author will require you to produce a large amount of high-quality material, over a long period of time. Writing is a slow-growth, long-term venture. Although it is possible to write one book that becomes a runaway bestseller, it is highly improbable. The better bet is to develop a set of habits that allow you to put out a regular amount of material. This lets you  grow your income incrementally.

Yes, it will take you time to build up a steady, monthly income, once you have established this, it is truly passive income. Once you have published a book, there is not much work to do, beyond marketing the book, to receive monthly royalties. In many cases, these books have very long life spans and will produce income for years.

There are a considerable number of benefits with becoming an author beyond just the financial aspects of the job. One of the truly amazing things about being an author is, you could literally change the world. The work you produce might change somebody’s life for the better, or dramatically improve somebody’s quality-of-life. The ability to do this is an incredible benefit that most jobs cannot provide.

In addition to the life-changing aspects of becoming an author, it is an incredibly flexible job. In fact, I am writing this chapter on my cell phone, dictating it while I am sitting out on my back porch. Not many jobs can offer you this flexibility, in terms of location, that being an author can provide.

You will need a minimal amount of equipment to get started. You probably already have what you need, in terms of a PC and an internet connection. In fact, you may not even need an internet connection all the time. You only need one if you’re using online tools to archive your work, or to upload your finished book to publishing sites.

One of the other great benefits of being an author is that you can write whatever you want. Although there will be certain limitations about the type of content you can publish on some sites, you can write literally whatever is of interest to you. This process is very different from a corporate environment, where you have to get the company approval for the type of content you are producing. Also, you don't have to use the writing style your boss wants you to write with. Being a self-published author is incredibly flexible, and you can put your unique spin on whatever topic you choose to write about. Self-publishing is a fantastic opportunity. The tools that are currently available for publishing content have never been easier to use.

Another advantage of being an author is that it will establish you as an authority in whatever area you choose to concentrate. Even if you are a self-published author, there’s a certain amount of prestige that comes with having a volume of
