CHAPTER ONE
⅏
AN UNSUSPECTED SHOCK
†JAYLNN†
What should the ideal weight for a teenager be? Less than a hundred pounds? One hundred and fifteen pounds, or maybe it’s a hundred and twenty pounds. What should the standard weight and size that we individuals should be? I mean seriously, girls will weigh fifty pounds, disappear when they turn on a side, and even declare that they're fat or even too heavy. Starving themselves until they're nothing but skin and bones, yet declare they've gained weight after taking a deep breath. It's absurd if you ask me.
M
y name is Jaylnn Neffin, a chestnut brown-skinned, sixteen-year-old girl, soon to be seventeen, who weighs roughly three hundred pounds. I've struggled, trying everything I can to get rid of the excess weight from dieting, to supplements, and even working out. The working-out never lasts for more than a few minutes, the struggle is clear there. Catherine mentioned I don't have the proper motivation to drive me as yet. Maybe she's right, or maybe she merely prefers to be the pretty and attractive one in our friendship.
Before, I hoped to lose weight so I could look decent for my crush Horatio Caruso, my childhood friend whom I've been in love with since middle school when he caught me from falling on my face. I had only begun putting on weight back then and was afraid that I’d get too fat and he wouldn’t like me anymore, but one day, he told me something only a real guy would say ‘size doesn't matter to me. You're beautiful the way you are.’ Hearing him say those remarks caused me to love him even more.

It’s our lunch hour and the cafeteria’s filled with students conversing with each other while enjoying their lunch. The aroma of stewed chicken, mac & cheese, curry fish, vegetable rice, and everybody’s favorite, fast-food, filling the cafeteria with its exquisite fragrance. I'm on the lunch line in the cafeteria choosing what I’d be eating today. I’ve been holding back on eating too much, but I was starving.
Don’t forget to leave some for the rest of us, fatso!
Gina commented from further down the line. The rest of us have to eat too.
Gina Delazi, the queen bee of Clamingtun High, with the beauty that almost every female student here wishes they had. Her long coal-black hair, flawless caramel skin, legs long enough to be that of a model’s. Her lips were kissable and plumped with eyes so intense, it’ll make you shudder if you stared in them for too long.
Oh, please, you freaking matchstick,
said Catherine from beside me. You take in the scent of a salad and assume you're full. PISS OFF!
Gina scoffed, rolling her eyes, her jaw clenched as she left the lunch-line with her tails trailing behind her. She never wanted something to eat, she simply needed to torment me into starving myself again.
She acts as if she eats.
Catherine shook her head dismissively.
Catherine Miller, my bestie and the polar opposite of me in appearance. She has an athletic body with little breasts and a bit of ass to match, her light brown eyes, long black silky hair brought out her unquestionable beauty. She doesn’t cover her figure with baggy clothing as I do with mine, her outfits are usually tight-fitting or somewhat revealing. Everything she wears hugs her skin, showing her perfect teenage figure. Meanwhile, I'm two hundred and ninety-seven pounds of excess fat, struggling to keep her sweatpants intact.
Maybe I should switch to dresses with infinite adaptability.
She turns to me and notices that I had put back one of the pizzas slices I had on my tray. Don't listen to her Jay, you're beautiful, and let no one tell you otherwise,
she advised
‘I never said I was ugly…’
I sighed, her words going through my left ear out my right. I ended up putting back all I’d picked up and chose a salad with a bottle of water before making my way to sit at the lunch table in the back. Horatio noticed us and I gave him a smile and a little wave with my fingers. I hoped he’d come over to us but he went to sit with his basketball buddies, which is different. He usually joins Catherine and me.
I wonder why he didn’t sit with us.
Since it's the end of junior year and we're moving on to senior, he's probably shy about telling you how he feels.
Catherine assumes.
Oh, please Cat, I’m not his type.
I replied in denial, I mean look at him—I couldn’t help but swoon as I said those words—those deep brown eyes, small sweet-looking pink lips, and wavy dark blonde hair, I want to run my finger through...
Jay, you’re drooling again…
she said, snapping me out of my trance. I think you should tell Horatio how you feel before our junior year ends. Don’t go into the senior year without the experience of his arm around your waist and his tongue down your throat.
‘That’s if his arms can wrap around my waist…’
What? EW!
I stammered, shoving her playfully.
It sounded like a good idea though. Who am I kidding? It’s a great idea, I would do anything to taste Horatio’s lips. Besides, he said he doesn't have an ideal weight for girls and he also said that I'm beautiful.
I’ll do it,
I said with confidence.
Attagirl!
Next year.
Oh, God!
she cried as she slaps her head before shaking it.
It would be nice to go into senior year in the arms of Horatio. Maybe then, the other students would see me for who I am and not one of the obese girls of Clamingtun Highschool. Horatio and I have been friends since we were babies. Our mothers were best friends in high school and are still best friends to this date, so we practically grew up together.
Gina always told me that Horatio only tolerates me for his mother’s sake, but I know she’s only jealous since she’ll never be as close to him as I am. I know they’ve had sex since she published it all over the school and he dumped her for it, only to take her back a week later. It doesn’t matter to me what they’ve done because in the end, this is high school and I will be the one to marry him when we get older.
Tell you what, there’s a party at Clearlake tonight,
Catherine, announced, Horatio’s gonna be there, so I suggest you find someplace secluded there and tell him how you feel girl. Be confident with yourself and make it happen.
Parties aren’t my thing, Catherine.
I replied, you know that.
It’s easy for her to say that I should face him and confess my love, but I can’t. I believe when she’s done with college, she'll either be a television host of her very own talk show or a successful author with best-selling self-help books. She knows how to make anyone feel good about themselves regardless of how they look and sometimes feel. I glanced down at the grass in my bowl and regret not keeping what I had taken before. I feel her nudge my arm and I peer up to see Horatio coming our way.
Hey JJ,
he said, shooting me a smirk before spinning a chair and sitting on it.
Hi Ratio.
I returned his greeting.
Gawd, would you not call me that?
he groaned, You know I hate that name.
You know I hate being called JJ too,
I joked, so I'll stop if you stop.
He gave me an impish smile and I couldn’t help but blush. He then leaned in and combed his hair back with his fingers, the persistent strands dropping back onto his handsome face. I swooned at his hotness as his chocolate-deep-set brown eyes studied mine.
I'll give you two some privacy,
Catherine said before leaving.
Horatio watched as she got up, grab her lunch tray, and made her way to the front counter before turning back to me. I shrugged, unsure of if I should go to the party.
So… are you gonna be at the party at Clearlake tonight?
he prodded with another smile.
Uh... I’m not sure, why?
I’d love for you to come, cause there's something I need to talk to you about, and I rather do it there.
he added, Something I've been holding back lately and would like to say before we become seniors.
Y—yes, I'll be there,
I said excitedly.
Good...
he chuckled, see you there hawt stuff.
I blushed at his compliment. He gets up and walks back to his buddies, and I gawked at his perfect ass pushing against his darkened jeans. Catherine nudged me, wrapping one of her arms around my shoulder, applauding me on what Horatio had mentioned. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but it was too late for that. This was a sign that he likes me and is going to ask me out at the party.
‘Coming senior year, Horatio and I are going to be a couple.’
The bell to announce the end of our lunch period rang, and we made our way to our classes. A wide smile remained on my face for the entirety of the rest of the day and I barely paid attention in class as I couldn’t stop thinking of what's to come with Horatio tonight.
Catherine informed me he broke up with Gina last week after an argument they had, so I'm sure what he wants to talk to me about is if I’d like to be his girlfriend.
‘Like I could ever say no.’
⸽At home…
Tonight, was the night, the night I confess to Horatio, or he asks me to be his girlfriend, whichever came first. I kept singing my favorite song as I went through my closet for the best outfit to wear for what’s going to be a memorable night.
This one is perfect,
I said, pulling out a sundress my sister Kiffani had got me for my last birthday.
Found something you like?
Catherine said, looking down on her phone as she flipped through Instagram videos and pictures.
Yup, and I'm gonna look hot in it!
She giggles. He said hawt stuff?
Yup,
I replied, His exact words were—see you there hawt stuff.
See, I told you, he loves you for who you are, not how you look.
she declared, I'm positive he's gonna ask you to be his girlfriend at the lake. With the full moon tonight, it's gonna be super romantic!
I beamed, thinking of what could transpire after he confesses to me, we would finally kiss. Oh, to feel his tender lips on mine and his hands around my waist, drawing me tighter, his broad chest against mine.
Jay, you're drooling again!
Gawd damnit!
I wipe off my drool and wore a jeans coat with the sundress I chose, it’s going to be cold when Horatio and I sept out tonight, so before I can have his arms around me, I will need something to keep a little warm.
After I put my thick, curly hair up in a ponytail, I tucked my phone in my coat pocket and followed Catherine to my car. I didn’t want to take my car, but since hers was low on fuel and she didn’t want to go all the way to the gas station and fill it, we had no choice but to take mine. Whatever, it doesn’t matter. Nothing can ruin this night because it’s the starting point of a new life for me, it’s like Catherine has been constantly reminding me, it’s going to be a night I'll never forget.

At Clearlake, the area was not as packed as I expected it would be, I was expecting all the students of junior school’s classes to be here, but most of them weren’t. There was a bonfire near the water and not too far from it were some cars where one had its trunk opened with
