About this ebook

The typical person in glasses and sandals seeing a picture of Gandhi may think he is simply a guy spinning at a wheel. Upon finding out what he had done, you may think, Really? Gandhi didn't seem very strong or big on the outside. He wasn't a genius, but he was smart enough. There wasn't much money in his bank account, and he wasn't friends with a lot of powerful people at the beginning. It wasn't anything extraordinary about him. Ordinary was about as good as it gets. It was his advantage, but he knew it. Even when it seemed like everything was working against him, Gandhi was able to stay true to his beliefs and enact his plans. Even the smallest of his works was a step in the right direction. Unless he acts, who will? His actions drew people to him. His life demonstrated that the commonplace, multiplied by a million, is no longer common.

    A boy with big heart

As a young boy, Mohandas Gandhi was taught to be fair and kind. In later life, his sense of right and wrong would assist him in changing India.

One day, at the age of 12, a man visited Mohandas Gandhi's classroom in India. As part of his inspection, he made sure students were learning properly. The test consisted of telling them a list of words in English to spell. As a beginner, Mohandas didn't know much about English. Unlike most of his classmates, he did not know how to spell kettle. Worse, he was the only one who got the spelling wrong.

Mohandas' mistake was noticed by the regular teacher, but not by the inspector. It was still possible to fix it. From the boy next to Mohandas, the teacher instructed him to copy the word correctly. Mohandas declined. Such a thing would be cheating! It was a furious moment for the teacher. Mohandas's innate sense of right and wrong would make him look bad now, in front of the inspector.

Mohandas was born in the western Indian town of Porbandar on October 2, 1869. Among the family members, he was the youngest. Additionally, his siblings were Raliatbehn; Laxmidas; and Karsandas; as well as two half-sisters from his father's first marriage.

The principles of honesty, dignity, and honour were paramount in Mohandas's family. The young Mohandas admired the loyalty and fairness that his father, Karamchand, displayed even as he was short-tempered. A saint in his eyes, Putlibai
