INTRODUCTION
What word or phrase would you use to absolutely capture the essence of Jesus’ teaching?
This was the question New Testament scholar Gordon Fee asked a class of forty seminary students during a course on the life and teaching of Jesus. Out of forty students, Fee recalls, only three gave the answer he was looking for. Most students gave answers such as love
or forgiveness
. The best answer, however, is the kingdom of God
(or kingdom of heaven in Matthew’s gospel). The abiding theme in the teaching of Jesus is the kingdom of heaven (see Matt. 4:17; 5:3, 10, 19; 7:21; 8:11; 10:7; 13:11).
The Sermon on the Mount outlines the character requirements and expectations for those who are citizens of the kingdom of heaven. It is Jesus’ most extensive teaching recorded in the gospels. In the gospel of Matthew, it spans three entire chapters (Matthew 5 – 7). The background to the sermon is typological to Moses and the people of Israel in their wilderness wanderings and at Mount Sinai. Moses and the people of Israel spent forty years in the wilderness and were tested as they wandered in the desert. Jesus has just emerged victorious from a forty day fast (1 day for each year) in the desert wilderness and
