About this ebook

At a glance, iGMNS gives information such as which hand or foot is playing, types of notes, and timing. With iGMNS, one can text music compositions through cell phone and computer keyboards. Although iGMNS can be used with regular music staff lines, iGMNS has its own sheet music, which incorporates the DL (drum line) between the music staff lines. iGMNS can be used for drum sets and for drums such as cajn, cowbell, cymbal, doumbek, conga, tabla, shekere, and udu. Because iGMNS is not dependent on any particular language, it is culturally neutral and international.

    iGMNS - International

    Graphic Music System:

Designed for Music Teachers, Composers, Drummers, and Percussionists

edicate this book to Ayiti, to the USA, land of immigrants, which brought together in one place the diversity for this drumfeast, & to all the drummers who took time to share their love of the art with me.

    WHY iGMNS?

Note : This publication grew from a collection of slides. Clarity, simplicity, and efficient use of space took precedence over grammar and spelling. Use this as a textbook and a workbook; take notes in it & use it as a reference book. ENJOY!

Designed to be as culturally neutral as possible using visual communication, iGMNS employs the international language of graphics to represent hands, drums, and the motion of hands and feet. Essentially, I am employing the same concept behind the design of traffic signals, signage in medical facilities, and airports- graphics constitute a form of communication that crosses cultural boundaries. Their forms or shapes are influenced by their functions.

Not all sounds made on drums can be mimicked by people. Furthermore, different people from same cultures use different sounds for the same note, and to complicate matters, most people cannot vocalize harmonies created on drums through the use of multi-layered or superimposed sounds. Last but not least, many drummers are left out of the discourse because drummers, from many cultures, do not have a written tradition. With iGMNS we can write, analyze, theorize, and share our creation with others. iGMNS and its associated sheet music will be vital to teachers, performers, and composers. iGMNS is a game changer!

Note: Use of Table of Sections

iGMNS users with various level of experiences will use the table of sections differently. Once the basics are learned in the earlier sections, one could jump to whatever sections are of greater interests.

Glossaries are presented at various intervals to guide in the memorization process needed for MUSICEXTING — Texting music using iGMNS symbols and abbreviations. Once one learned an abbreviation for a word, try to use it instead of the word– Use it or lose it! Words which are four letters or less can be used in iGMNS musicexting as is, and words five letters or more should be abbreviated.

Please memorize abbreviations and symbols. I provided some in the Table of Section.

Remember: Read it, write it, and memorize it!

    iGMNS: Vision, Purpose, & Goals

Because the prevalent notation system is inadequate for notating percussive instruments, I felt the need to design a notation system for them and their users: teachers, composers, performers.

We will have a website dedicated to maintaining, improving, teaching, and disseminating information about iGMNS. For the moment, please use [email protected] to submit suggestions and ideas.

Joining the digital revolution, iGMNS users will be able to use computer and cellular keyboards to convey music compositions without the use of any sheet music. This is the basic concept behind musicexting.

Furthermore, iGMNS will have its own sheet music—The Modular Unit Sheet (MUS) music will allow drummers to write compositions, and, because of the inclusion of
