    From Here - Margaret Kroeck

    Him

Emma shoved me hard. It hurt. Her face was full of fear, then nothing. She shoved me real hard. I fell into the glass door and hit my head. Some guy in all black with mean eyes and tattoos on his arm shoved past me and grabbed her. It all happened so fast. I didn’t know what was going on. Emma, I screamed, she was picked up and carried away. She looked up at me and tears and acceptance rolled down her face. The bad man ran to a black car. He shoved her down on the ground and she stood there with her head lookin down. I struggled up and the pain in my head meant nothing. I ran towards Emma. He threw her into the backseat and ran around the car. I finally got near and he had run to the drivers side and jumped in and sped away. Emma didn’t even look at me, her head hung down. Jill had just turned the corner with a smile on her face looking for us. I ran back to her car as my parents drove up as well. Jill mouthed where is Emma? I screamed with all my might the bad man took her away. Jill frantically looked around as Mom and Dad ran up to her. I could tell they were talking about something but no one was telling me. I yelled FIND EMMA!! FIND HER!!. Dad grabbed me Mom got out her cell phone and dialed 911. Jill ran to her car and took off down the street I guess to go look for Emma. Dad and I went to our car while Mom was on the phone. We pulled out behind Jill. Everything happened so fast. I didn’t know what to do. I kept looking everywhere in the back seat to see if I could see the car that Emma was in. It was so dark out. Mom got off the phone and was speaking to Dad. I yelled Hey! I want to know what’s going on. Mom looked at me with tears in her eyes and signed I called the police, I told them what you told us. Jill has already called them before about a suspicious vehicle. Honey we are going to find her. I had tears running down my face. My Emma, It was hard for me to talk to Mom I was so busy looking up and down the streets. I will kill him if he hurts my Emma, she is mine. We kept on driving and then Moms phone rang. It was the police I could tell by the way she was talking. Dad took another turn and kept driving down the road. I didn’t see anything and the lump on my head throbbed a bit. I didn’t care. Looking and looking and looking. OMG where was she? Mom looked at me and signed the police are sending all available people to go and find her. We should go home and wait for any answer. I am going to call Jill. Dad nodded his head and turned the blinker for the road that goes home. I yelled NO MOM NO, we have to keep looking. Dad stopped the car and turned to me. Sammo, what if she turns up at her house. The police are doing their best. Lets get you and Mom home and I will go back out and keep driving around okay? I promise I wont stop okay? It is late and we need to get Mom home, she is tired I need you to be the man of the house and keep an eye for her. I nodded and kept crying. I don’t care about the tears, I am not ashamed to love Emma. She is my most best friend, right then a thought popped in my head. I said out loud I wonder if HE took Emma to her old house? I rubbed the lump on the back of my head. It was sore. Dad looked at Mom and then he turned on his turn signal. I could feel he revved the engine and we flew past our house to the highway. Must be that is where Emma used to live. I saw Mom call Jill and we were on the way. Dad didn’t even stop for stop signs, I was his lookout for any police. We took the exit off the highway and headed down a street. Lots of dirty old houses here. We stopped in front of one. It had shutters ripped off the hinges barely hanging on. Jill pulled in behind us, I Immediately yanked open my door and ran up to the house….

    HER

He screamed I’m going to kill you!!! HE threw me over his shoulder, my arm pinned against his neck. Sam looked so surprised that I threw him into the door. HE wasn’t going to get him, I looked into Sam’s eyes as HE ran down the street with me. He smelled like cigarettes and stale beer and hate.. His leather jacket had a metal thing that was poking me in the belly. I heard the fairies whispering we will find you, closet will be there. No fairies you cant help me now. All of this ALL OF THIS had been a dream. I must be in closet now and I will wake to smell the air. HE plunked me down in the backseat and ran to his car door. The Inside hinge was broken I tried to open the door and HE screamed YOU little piece of shit you cant get away no, now you’re gonna pay. HIS manic giggle sounded like nails scraping down the chalkboard. There were empty beer bottles inside the car and the backseat had papers all over it. Articles circled with red lines all of them about him being wanted and how the police had a warrant out for him. I kept thinking anytime I will wake up, I will miss Molly she was my little love bug. Streets whizzed by and we were on the highway. Swerving back and forth over the yellow lines on the road. We took an exit after about fifteen minutes or so and headed down the street that I used to live on. HE was going to take me to HER. I will pay, omg shivers ran through me but I had no more tears to shed. I had nothing. Only acceptance. I knew what was coming, I cant fight anymore I must accept this. I am bad, I am dirty, it is all my fault. I looked down at my nice clothes, surely those will be ripped off and the rags I once wore will be thrown on me. He stopped the car in the yard and pulled me through the front of the car out by the drivers side and yanked me toward the front of the house. The front door lock was busted so HE just went through. The house wasn’t lit, the smell was horrible. It smelled like horror. HE turned on the lights, most of the bulbs were busted but enough of the room could I see. So much negativity and hate in this place. The wallpaper once had pretty lines now marred with time. Cobwebs and dust everywhere. I remember those stairs, how many times I had crept up and down therm. Thirteen, ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE TEN ELEVEN TWELVE THIRTEEN. Smelled like cigarettes, fear, moldy ugliness. The carpet had burn holes in it and the furniture was dingy yellow and dusty. I remember HER laying there naked moaning and groaning over the random men who would come to the house, either for HER or me. I happened to look at the corner, the crust of bread hidden so many months ago was covered in dust and hate. He dragged me into the kitchen, I remember this kitchen where I had snuck down so many times just to get a scrap of food ONLY when SHE was asleep. Even thinking of HER I looked around waiting for HER to appear rubbing her hands together almost exuberantly near joy about the coming beating. The look of sadistic satisfaction on HER face. The tile was chipped and marred with brown muddy streaks and rats ran behind the refrigerator to hide from the clomping of HIS boots. HE sat me down and tied me to the chair with yards of twine. It bit cruelly into my arms and legs. I didn’t cry out that would only make it worse. Didn’t hurt though, I was numb. HE leaned real close to me and spat into my face. I kept my head down. I could almost hear closet begging me to come upstairs so he could hide me. Even closet couldn’t hide me now. HE slapped me in the head, my neck bounced around, I could feel the trickle of blood slide down my cheek. HE sat down in front of me. You are such a filthy piece of shit it is because of you I cant go out in public. Police looking for me, your mother was right. Both of you should have never been born. My thoughts raced, both of us? There is only one of me. HE slapped me again, pushing my head back, my neck felt as if it were going to break. I almost wanted it too, then I could just float away. LISTEN to me when I am speaking to you you ugly whore. Are you still a whore? HAHAHA I remember how you teased me. He giggled with a sinister way and reached over the table and found HIS needle. I should shoot you up with me like I did your mom but that would be a waste of good dope. HE held the needle above my arm, I screamed in my head CLOSET help me. I could see the awful liquid sloshing around in the needle, which had rust on it. The flickering of the kitchen light caught his attention and HE looked up. I kept my head down I assumed that pose at such an early age it was so instinctual. HE leaned over me and reached behind me and grabbed his belt. Let’s see if this will work. He cracked up beside my ear, left my ear ringing. Didn’t flinch, I was already gone. Fairies had long since stolen me away. DON’T YOU IGNORE ME!!! I ripped back into reality as HE whispered beside my ear
