Angela Reyes Carrasquillo is a distinguished Professor Emerita at Fordham University in New York City. She is nationally known for her work in second language and bilingual education, and has published extensively in these areas. Her books include Between Puerto Rico and New York: A Latina Professor's Journey, The Bilingual Advantage (with D. Rodriguez & K. Lee), Language Minority Students in the Mainstream Classroom (with V. Rodriguez), and Hispanic Children and Youth in the United States. Dr. Carrasquillo has worked with schools and children, motivating them to excel academically and to maintain their cultural and linguistic roots.

    The Power of Poetry

    Human beings tend to express what they think or feel inside them, and they do it in different ways and through different means: orally, written text, musically, and through the different dimensions of visual arts. Poetry is one of the preferred ways of expressing what the mind is processing; it opens the opportunity for expression and usually, there are no judges to dictate the content or format of what is written. Poetry is written the way that it is thought and it comes out without thinking if it is politically correct or if it follows the conventional correct grammar and stylistic format.

    The topics and themes are diverse; they represent different mental mind sets such as joy, happiness, confidence, amazement as well as moments of sadness, uncertainty, anxiety or anger. When I encounter a thought, an event or an experience that impacts me, I use poetry "pa sacarlo pa fuera/taking it out of my system."

    The poems included in this volume were written in different cycles of my life, not published, and represent my philosophy of life as well as my preferences. I express myself about those close to me: my parents, my children, my grandchildren, my friends as well as vivencias and meaningful places. I find that
