Finding your Passionate Purpose in
Life
Chapter 1
PASSION
Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.
--John Wesley
What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word passion? (please remember this is not one of those books). Does passion mean excited, loud, intense, really into it? I have been called passionate my entire life.
My coaches, my parents, my husband, and most recently my own kids and mentor have referred to me that way. They have all described me as a passionate person
. My husband goes on further – Babe, you love passionately, you hate passionately … it must be exhausting being that passionate over everything.
I’m not sure it is exhausting, but it has gotten me into a few binds.
When the dream of this book came into my mind I knew it was my calling to help others feel the passion of life I have and to give a glimpse of what living passionately looks like. In my opinion if you are not passionate about SOMETHING in your life, then you have a serious problem.
My desire is to help you see how living a life with passion can bring clarity to your existence, bring your relationships to a whole new level, and help you lead like you never have before.
One time I decided to go out after a football game my sophomore year in high school. There was a certain boy who wanted to bring me to the local taco shop and I thought it was a great idea. I’m really not sure if I was allowed to go, but I did any way. (ask for forgiveness rather than permission-right?) When I came home, my father was waiting for me. My daddy – 5’10" with blonde hair, deep blue eyes and an oil roughneck who worked 24/7 – was a bit scary to my friends. A little rough around the edges, he put up an intimidating front.
We lived in a community where the houses were so close together that I knew when the neighbors went to the restroom because the light would shine into my room. It was a middle class, nice three-bedroom, two bath home with a pool – a typical suburban home.
We had this nice sectional couch that was placed right in the middle of the room. The couch was the only thing between my dad and me. Where have you been young lady?
came spewing out of his mouth. I said something I shouldn’t have, and in one leap – and when I say one leap, I mean like superman style – my dad jumped the sectional and coffee table and started after me in his boxer shorts.
For a split second I thought about apologizing, but then I saw it. I saw the Red Hot Passion coming out of my dad’s eyes, and all I could do was run. I turned and ran out the door and down the street. I looked back once and saw my dad realizing he was in his underwear. I kept running. I have no idea what my father had planned on doing if he caught me. I just knew I deserved whatever he would bring.
My disrespect hurt him deeply. My haughty passion butted up against his angry fury. I realized that night my dad and I were quite similar. We had a deep belly kind of passion and if it was not directed correctly, he and I could both cause a lot of damage.
Passion to me is that feeling that you get when you JUST CAN’T hold back anymore. When the floodgates that were trying to hold it in, just bust open. Passion is not always bad! In fact, passion is very healthy and in many cases helped change the world.
Let me ask you a question. I really want you to think about this. This will help define your passion, or spark a potential passion in your life. Ok- here it goes.
IF MONEY WAS NOT AN ISSUE-AT ALL – I mean you don’t need to make money, and you had as much as you needed to do whatever – what is one thing you’d get up and do everyday?
Ok, what was your initial response? Was it to have housekeepers? A drove of servants to wait on your every need? To go shopping all day everyday? If your first answer was somewhat superficial, as was mine, let’s go a step further. Imagine if you did that thing EVERY SINGLE DAY for an entire year … then what? WHAT
