Dear Lord, Thank You for Reminding Me..... - Charlene Harper

Daily Life Lesson 1: How Far Would You Be Willing to Drive to Reach Your Dreams?

    Dear Lord,

I woke up one morning in January, thinking about my life. I had just begun working through a program that required me to make a pledge to no longer allow myself to be inconsistent, lack follow-through, or procrastinate. Last night, as part of the program, I had to write my own obituary and reflect on the life I desire instead of my present existence. Can You imagine my having to write my own obituary, Lord? It was a scary thought… at first. As I visualized it more, I realized that I was a long way from reaching many of my desired goals. As it turned out, we were allowed to embellish our lives and die with no regrets, having accomplished our dreams. Whew! I thought. I still have time.

I went to bed with this on my mind and woke up considering my life and all the things I have yet to do. I recalled that book I wanted to write, all the places I hoped to visit, and the school for underprivileged children I desired to establish. The more I imagined, the longer the list became.

Then I reflected on last year and how I had started out with so many goals that were never realized. I thought about how it was the beginning of yet another year. Will I look up again this time next year, if I’m around, and wonder the same thing?

This reminded me of a story that my friend Dan told me about a man named Bill. Dan met Bill at a meeting for adult children of alcoholic fathers (ACAF). Bill was a pleasant guy in his midsixties with long gray hair. He attended the meetings regularly but never had a lot to say during group discussions.

One night after a meeting, Dan had the privilege of spending time with Bill. He discovered that Bill was homeless and living in his van. Bill was friendly but did not talk freely about his past. His educational background was unknown to those at the meeting, as was the story of how he ended up on the streets.

Although Dan talked to him often, Bill remained fairly private about discussing personal matters, especially his family. When asked about his family, he would change the subject. His conversation was usually superficial and left one wondering about what he didn’t say. Was he married, or had he ever been married? Did he have children or grandchildren? Where did he come from? Did anyone care about him?

Dan and Bill developed a casual friendship, and Dan discovered that Bill had been living in his red Volkswagen van for over fifteen years. Bill shared that he knew the places he could park without arousing suspicion. Bill also had developed a small network of friends who would let him park in front of their houses. They gave him occasional meals and offered hot showers. Bill did have an income. He received a small public assistance check and made money doing odd jobs, usually at construction sites.

One day when Dan was on his way home from work, he saw Bill’s van at a park near his house. Bill was sitting at a picnic table nearby. Dan parked his car and walked toward Bill. Hi, Bill, he said as he drew closer. What’s going on?

Bill, who had been looking down, suddenly looked up and smiled. Nothing much. Just trying to catch a cool breeze.

For several minutes, Dan sat next to Bill. They became engrossed in friendly banter. The subject of Dan’s parents eventually came up. Bill said that his dad was similar to Dan’s in the way he had abused alcohol. This was the most personal thing Bill had ever divulged about his family.

At length, Bill asked Dan about his day. Dan said he was coming back from a meeting in Carmel.

Carmel! exclaimed Bill. I’ve always wanted to go to Carmel! He said that for most of his life, he had dreamed of going to Carmel. He could visualize the beautiful sandy beaches and the rolling waves of the deep blue-green ocean. He imagined himself running along the peaceful beaches with the sand squishing between his toes and the water sliding over his feet, softly wrapping around his ankles and rising to his knees. He could see himself breathing in the salty air and feeling the sprinkle of cool seawater upon his eagerly awaiting
