    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would be remiss if I did not mention the late Dr. Haim Ginott, child psychologist, whose teachings influenced me the most while raising my own three children.

    FOREWORD

A TTITUDE IS EVERYTHING to quote my late father. None of us rise in the morning with the attitude: Today I will try to make my child feel guilty, stupid, incapable, worthless, unimportant, weak or unloved. HOWEVER, despite our best efforts, sometimes even before breakfast and before the children are on the school bus, we have succeeded in accomplishing at least one or perhaps all of the above. In the book, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, the nanny, Mae’s mantra was clear: You is kind. You is smart. You is important. Indeed she had the right idea of what message to convey to a child everyday.

Misbehavior and punishment are not opposites that cancel each other - on the contrary- they breed and reinforce each other.

    Haim G. Ginott

If you are asking yourself questions about your parenting techniques, and if you want to become the best parent you can be, then this guide is for you.

No matter what the age of your child, from toddler to adolescent, a change in parenting style can make a difference in your child’s attitude, self esteem, behavior, and especially in his or her relationship with you. Changing your parenting style can also change how you feel as a parent.
