    HISTORY OF HYPNOSIS

T he ancient seers of the world gave importance to knowledge and wisdom to remove the ignorance of mind which is the cause of mental and physical afflictions, and they are applicable universally even at present conditions.

Mesmerism practiced by Mesmer used the vital energy stored in magnets to enhance the vital energy of the body, for healing, rather than taking directly from Universal Source. It was the initial beginning of public awareness on hypnotherapy.

Later, the scientific acceptance of hypnotherapy is due to Milton Erickson, known as the Father of hypnosis who gave a systematic approach to the practice of hypnotherapy.

Now, the ancient knowledge are being validated by the Scientific inventions and both the Science and Spirituality work together to enhance the healthy life of world community at large.

In Hypnotic state, the conscious mind becomes passive to accept suggestions and the subconscious mind remains awake and alert. During awake, the conscious and subconscious mind both are awake and alert. During sleep, the conscious mind is asleep and the subconscious mind is awake.

During hypnosis which is also known as trance or relaxation, the mind becomes 2000 times more conscious, and the person never becomes unconscious and it is not that the person is unaware of what he is saying. Hence, the hypnotic statements are not accepted for legal purpose since the information can be manipulated by the client if he is willing.

    1. SELF AWARENESS

W hile interacting with Client, the mind has to be silent, the internal dialogue should be nil, to be a good listener. The therapist has to be present in Client’s world free from own ideas. While listening, being neutral, allow the Client to complete their sentences at their own pace.

Try not to complete a sentence of client especially during relaxation - trance, it may create confusion in terms of identification of persons or situations.

TECHNIQUE FOR THE THERAPIST AND CLIENT TO BECOME SELF AWARE - WHICH HELPS IN KEEPING THE MIND SILENT (this has to be practiced all the time):

    1. Keep all the senses awake, to keep the internal dialogue quiet.

    2. Become fully aware of present moment.

Mind can not see or do two things at a time. So, to focus on the present moment, look at the things in front of you, hear the sounds around and feel the air, chair, smell and taste – becoming alert.

Most of the times, we are under self-hypnosis (suggestible), i.e., consciously we allow the mind to take control of our own self not controlling what we are doing or thinking – not having self control.

Now, by keeping the senses alert, we remain control of our own self.

When the work is done by the 5 senses, what you would do?

    3. Become aware of space, silence that exists within us all the time.

Almost all the time, we are not aware of the silence within because our focus is not in silence but in activities. When we finish our work, our focus can be moved to silence, instead of wandering thoughts. Or mind can be controlled, by being aware of thoughts.

Earlier we allowed our mind to wander when there is no work, now the focus should be on silence, which exists within us all the time, when there is no work.

Either we have to focus on work or on silence. Even whilst thinking, do it consciously.

One of the purposes of emotional healing is to remove the blockages to allow the life force to move freely. Even this practice of experiencing inner silence within self would remove the energy blockages caused by emotions and help to heal all types of dis-ease.

Being present, other person will feel that you are listening. It’s not blank, it is to remain alert and open being neutral so that the client never uses any type of defense mechanisms while revealing or experiencing their issues.

The simple and easy method to remain in self awareness is to know our self as a point of light located at the centre of forehead. The moment we remove our image (of body) from the mind, the mind becomes silent, focused connecting to the Cosmic power.

    2. MIND

M ind is divided into conscious and subconscious mind

Conscious mind is like the tip of the iceberg and subconscious mind can be called as the part that is hidden inside the sea. Eighty percent of these bergs are under water so it’s the power of the currents rather than the power of the wind which moves them. The personality of an individual is affected by the emotions that are stored up in the subconscious mind rather than that exists in the conscious mind.

Sub conscious is affected mostly by the experience connected with the childhood issues. Children up to the age of 12 to 14 years never think in a logical way due to immaturely developed brain, find difficult to cope up with people and situation influenced by psycho, bio and social factors, and hence unresolved and troubled emotions are formed and stored in sub conscious to carry with them along their journey of life which plays a major role in development of the personality.

Conscious mind, at many times, is not aware of what is there in the subconscious mind. Whatever is stored in subconscious mind will lead your life. When you become aware of what is there in the subconscious mind, 50% of the problems are solved.

Schemas like I can’t do this, kick me, ‘why not you" are repeated by own self through internal dialogues and unconsciously become part of the personality.

    RIGHT BRAIN AND LEFT BRAIN

RIGHT BRAIN: Long term memory, music, art, poetry, imagination, pictures, emotions, unlimited, whole, sub conscious.

LEFT BRAIN: Short term memory, language, maths, linear, rational, logic, analytical, reasoning, intellect, conscious.

    38558.png

    3. THE PERSONALITY

O ne of the qualifications to collect the history of the Client, to identify the issue and empower them is to create good rapport by identifying the personality of the Client.

There are mainly Two types of personality: Physical (Extrovert) and Emotional (Introvert).

Physicals: They are more comfortable in groups, social butterfly.

Emotional: They are comfortable in one to one.

The individual personality of being physical or emotional is developed by the child by learning from the Father, the role model, sample for her/him. Hence, if the Father is an emotional, Child also becomes an Emotional and vice-versa.

Then there are personalities described based on Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic dominance:

Visual: They give importance to scenes, more into visual.

Kinesthetic: They give importance to feelings.

Auditory: connect more with auditory, like to hear than read.

Personality is nothing but a learned behavior. Personality is created by three factors: Psychological, Biological and Social factors.

In connection with relationships, in many cases, Physical is attracted to Emotional or the opposite. Why do Emotional and Physical come together initially? They come together because the Emotional tends to behave like Physical while meeting a partner who is Physical in nature. Once they become familiar, Emotional gets back to work, to their original nature of being Emotional from Physical and then the problem in relationship occurs.

    PRIORITIES FOR A PHYSICAL

    1. Relationship

    2. Children

    3. Friends and Hobbies

    4. Career

    PRIORITIES FOR AN EMOTIONAL

    1. Career

    2. Hobbies

    3. Relationship and family

    4. Mistress and Friendship

When you understand that this is my personality, we can change to adapt because personality is a learned behavior.

When you identify the personality like the one who is dominant in one of the senses, you explain in the language which they understand. Great Healers try to communicate in the Client’s language even without their knowledge and hence they are able to create a good rapport. When you have good rapport, there will not be any resistance.

When you become silent within or become self-aware, you get aligned with the Client’s personality. As a therapist, you must be able to change to adapt your personality according to the need. The more you try to be interested, become quiet, you express in the same personality of Client.

When your mind becomes clear, quiet, your mind will reflect the client’s personality like a mirror.

CAUSES OF ABNORMAL (DIS-EASE) BEHAVIOR - PSYCHO BIO AND SOCIAL FACTORS

The view of causation underlying the medical model emphasizes the role of various organic conditions that can impair brain functioning and lead to psychopathology.

The psychoanalytic and humanistic models concerned primarily with stress situations that involve a threat to the individual and therefore elicit anxiety and stress which leads to maladaptive behavior and mental break down.

Faulty learning is seen as the key cause of psychopathology by the behaviorist model.

The humanistic and existential models believe blocked or distorted personal growth is a primary cause of psychopathology. The interpersonal model concentrates on unsatisfactory interpersonal relationships as being at the root of maladaptive behavior.

The socio-cultural viewpoint emphasizes the role of pathological social conditions such as poverty, racial prejudice and discrimination and destructive violence in the development of abnormal behavior.

    4. CLIENT’S MAP OF THE WORLD

T he techniques used by Milton Erickson, the father of hypnosis are explained in Neuro Linguistic Programming. This is basically a compilation of techniques and methods used by healers and Counselors.

In NLP, it is mentioned, every individual has their own map of the world, own reality.

How do we create this map of the world?

    We perceive through five senses:

    Visual

    Auditory

    Kinesthetic

    Olfactory

    Gustatory

Through these five input channels/senses, we create our positive or negative map of the world by the standard method of processing information.

The mind processes the information by any of the following methods:

    a. Associate

    b. Generalize

    c. Motivation

    d. Distort

    e. Delete information

    f. Try to read others mind

    g. Come under the influence of Attachments and

    h. Uses defense mechanism

During Cognitive Session and also during Therapy, Therapist has to identify the above methods by which the clients have processed information for the particular issue.

By identifying the Processing method, Therapist can make the client understand the reality and expand his map of the world, increasing the number of choices.

    a. Association: Travelling in a lift and lift stops and the person undergoes fear. The brain associates the fear with closed space to create fear on identifying any closed space not remembering its original stressors - cause or situations.

    b. Generalization: If one person is angry, the mind processes the information such that every individual is an angry person.

    c. Motivation: We reinforce the behavior or unlearn the behavior by various types of motivation.

    d. Distortion: misunderstand the information shared by others.

    e. Deletion: we delete portions of our experience that are necessary for a full and rich model of the world. The adolescent believes he is being unjustly treated and picked on and doesn’t perceive his own participation in creating the situation, has not developed a useful model of the world.

    f. Reading the mind: when someone keeps quiet, people think, they are framing against them.

    g. Attachment: When we are attached to person or things, our intellect loses its judging ability. Attachment is the one which gives pain if the object is not present.

    h. Defense Mechanism: Based on Sigmund Freud, human beings try to balance between Id, Ego and Superego. Id is the basic instinct, the child wants things immediately. Ego is to postpone the instinct for later depending upon the situation. Superego is the conscience to be good, following moral ideas.

Defense Mechanism in-fact helps us to deal with anxiety. When it is out of balance, human beings get into anxiety, stress.

Any personality depends upon Instinctual needs (ID), rational thinking (Ego) and Moral thinking or ideal personality (Super ego).

When you are not in balance, the ID comes into more control causing trouble.

If Defense mechanism breaks, it leads to psychosis. When circumstances give a threat, we try to protect our self through defense mechanism.

    TYPES OF DEFENSE MECHANISMS

    1. Repression - Involuntary removal of awareness of name and unacceptable relations

    2. Denial - Denial of a deceased person by thinking, still alive

    3. Rationalization - Wrong but self justifying reason

    4. Projection - hiding unacceptable urges and blaming by attributing to others

    5. Displacement - Strong anger of one to another

    6. Turning against self - Self accusatory, passive and inferior feeling

    7. Reaction formation - Seeing love as hate and vice-versa, overact

    8. Reversal - Active to
