MENTAL HEALTH - Malone Laurel
Introduction
Mental illness is the result of a biological, psychological, or developmental disorder of the brain that disrupts the normal functioning of thoughts, emotions, and/or behavior. The individual suffering from mental health problems may find it difficult to function at work or maintain good relationships.
Studies suggest that mental illnesses are caused by a combination of biological, genetic, psychological, and social factors that interact to lead to brain dysfunction. The risk factors for mental illness are different for each individual, but anyone can develop them if the conditions are just right.
Disturbations in thinking, emotion, and/or behavior are common in mental disorders (psychiatric or psychological). It is common for people to encounter slight disruptions in these aspects of their lives from time to time. However, when these disruptions cause significant distress and/or interfere with their daily lives, they are considered mental illnesses or disorders. You can experience mental illness for a short time or for a long time.
At some point during their lives, approximately 50 per cent of adults experience some type of mental illness. Approximately half of those with symptoms are moderate or severe. Depression is the leading cause of disability among older people, and mental disorders account for four of the top ten causes of disability. Even in the midst of high mental illness rates, only 20 percent of those affected receive professional assistance.
The stigma surrounding these disorders persists, despite amazing advances in understanding and treatment. People with illnesses can sometimes be blamed for their illness or viewed as lazy and irresponsible due to their illness. The government and insurance companies sometimes look down on mental illness as a less real or legitimate condition than physical disease. But a growing understanding of how mental illnesses affect both health care costs and lost workdays is changing this pattern.
In some cases, it is difficult to distinguish the behavior of a mentally ill person from that of a healthy person. For example, If a person has experienced a significant loss, such as the loss of a spouse or child, it may be difficult to distinguish between normal grief and depression, since all of these events result in sadness and moodiness. A person stressed and worried about their job can also have difficulty being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, since these feelings are common to most people at some point or another. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between having certain observable characteristics (such as being conscientious or ordering your life) and having a personality disorder (such as obsessive-compulsive disorder). Therefore,
