    About Cree Storm

    CHAPTER 1

Warren sat on the porch swing drinking his beer. Normally it was one of his favorite things to do after a long hard day at work. Watching the tired sun slowly slip from the sky as the moon rose ready to relieve the sun from its duty... it was beautiful.

The way the horizon lit with colors that no crayon company could ever replicate, no matter how hard they tried as the light breeze made the leaves play like a band to the sounds of the singing crickets, frogs, and other wildlife that surrounded him.

It was normally relaxing, and something Warren looked forward to, but tonight... well, tonight he wasn’t really enjoying anything. It was funny how life had no meaning when your future looked so despondent... and damned if that wasn’t how Warren felt right now.

Thinking back to how his life had such hope, Warren remembered the day that the sun seemed to shine brighter, and the air smelled sweeter. It was the day his Cackle Alpha, Orson, had directed him to go and find a man... Breeze Thornridge, brother to Julian Thornridge, past Alpha of the Thornridge Cackle.

It had taken Warren a bit of time to find the young hyena shifter. He hadn’t been on the land Julian had originally directed him to. It had surprised Warren to discover Breeze had been moved to what he remembered as desolate forest grounds that bordered their own Cackle lands of Trident.

Honestly, it had surprised Warren that he or one of his other hyena brothers hadn’t discovered Breeze and his friends a lot earlier, because of how close they were to them, but then again the area had once been so desolate, Warren didn’t figure Orson or Jackson had ever even considered anyone living on it so close to them.

The fact of it was that their lives had been seriously quiet, until Miller and Calvin had come rushing into it. It was then that Warren and his friends discovered the Whitewing alpha, Lenox, and the self-appointed Alpha to the Thornridge Cackle, Patrice, had been planning to take over their Trident Cackle. Now they were more or less in a war.

Hyenas were predators and they were also kind of hotheaded. When it came to their homelands, they would defend it to their death, because it wasn’t just about them, it was about the entire cackle, which was another way of saying a group of hyenas.

Warren’s cackle had all been dancing around the other cackles from time to time when they would try and encroach on Trident territory. They would battle each other here and there from time to time, but lately it was becoming far more dangerous and deadly, causing them all to be on edge constantly.

Some good had come out of it all though. They now had an alliance with one of the baddest cackles in the area... the all-women cackle, Dirge, with their Alpha Louise as their leader. Those women were kickass fighters, and Orson and Louise had set up training for their men to learn from the Dirge Cackle on how to truly fight. Not that the Trident Cackle sucked at fighting, but their cackle had never really had to learn such a thing, because they were mostly a mining area and horse ranch.

In return, Orson, their Trident leader, was now helping Louise’s cackle with setting up a running ranch of their own, and paying her cackle for their training.

However, the best part of all of this shit, was that Orson found his mate in Miller, and Jackson found his mate in Calvin. Miller and Calvin had been not only reunited with their father, but their brother Mikka as well... who also finally was able to mate with the man he had known to be his for years, and had been kept from for just as long.

Mates... fucking mates. Warren was happy for his friends finding theirs. They deserved to be happy, and them finding Miller and Calvin gave hope to the other men of their cackle that theirs were out there too... and Warren had found his just a few weeks ago. He should be elated, but instead, here he sat alone... feeling as if his heart had been ripped from his chest, and not knowing what to do, because now he had found his own mate, but the man wanted nothing to do with him.

Julian had been worried as hell about Breeze. Breeze was blind and alone, he had said, but when Warren had found the man, he had discovered two things. The man wasn’t alone at all, and he was Warren’s mate... the one the Fates deemed as his very own.

Warren had tried approaching Breeze, but had stopped and decided to watch and get an understanding on the dynamics of the situation.

There were several men living on the land with Breeze and damn were they all close as hell. Warren had felt a bit of relief to know Breeze wasn’t alone, until he figured out that all the men living with him and around him were not predator shifters. Hell, it seemed the only true predator on that land was Warren, and fuck, Breeze was blind.

Warren had scented a rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, and other tiny-ass prey shifters, but no other hyenas, jackals, bears, or other large predator types. He had scented something else... vanilla and morning dew. His cock had gone from zero to a hundred in seconds and his mind screamed out Mate!

Holy fucking shit I’ve found my mate, but who? Get control of yourself, Warren. You can’t just pounce in there demanding things. You have to stay cool, calm and in control, Warren thought to himself.

So, he had spent a couple of days just watching and learning what he could, until Warren had gotten a good feel as to what he was facing. Not wanting to startle or alarm anyone, he had called out to Breeze.

Breeze had come out of his home, along with two other dainty men, asking who he was and what he wanted. Warren had almost lost his mind at how gorgeous the young hyena shifter was.

Breeze was a few inches shorter than Warren’s own six feet. He had beautiful, shoulder-length, black hair, which emphasized the magnificent silver eyes that looked his way, and his body was so toned with well-defined muscles in all the right places. The man’s body told Warren that Breeze might be blind, but he did some heavy lifting and moving, and damn sure took care of himself.

My name is Warren Patrick of the Trident Cackle. I was sent by Julian Thornridge to find his brother and keep him safe from an up-and-coming battle with the Whitewing Cackle. Warren called out loud enough for them all to hear.

Breeze gasped, and his hand came to his luscious plump lips, Julian’s alive?

Yes, and he’s worried about you, Breeze. I’m here to help keep you safe from harm in case Lenox or his henchmen show up here to cause trouble, before or during the battle to come, Warren stated with authority.

At first it looked as if Breeze was going to invite him in, but then he stood up straighter and something flickered in the silver orbs that Warren couldn’t make out, before he stated in a not-too-kind tone, Thank you for letting me know my brother is alive and well, and also for warning us about a possible threat. However, you don’t need to stay. My friends and I can take care of ourselves.

I have orders to watch over you, Breeze. I can’t just leave, Warren stated firmly.

Breeze snorted and waved Warren off. You are not welcome on my land, Mr. Patrick. I can’t stop you from standing where you are, but I can stop you from coming onto my property. We might look weak to you and others, but trust me when I say we are far from it. Now go back and tell Julian I’m happy he’s alive and well, and I hope all goes well for you in your up-and-coming battle. Have a nice day.

Warren couldn’t believe he was being dismissed like he was. From the way Julian had spoken about Breeze, Warren had thought he was going to meet a docile, sweet man. However, this guy was anything but. Warren could have been fighting by his Alpha’s side, but instead he had been sent to find a man and protect him, only to be dismissed as if he was more a nuisance than an ally, and damn it, they were mates. Surely, whoever his mate was must have scented him, and known who they were to each other.

Mates were supposed to know each other immediately and... and... and, well... mate.

The thought that his own mate could just dismiss him, or allow him to be dismissed like this... as if they were nothing... well, it pissed him off. I’m not leaving, Breeze. I was sent here to do a job. My people are in danger, and instead of helping to protect my cackle, I’m here to protect you. I follow my orders, with or without your consent.

And you can do it from your border line, Mr. Patrick. Chaser and Lovett will ensure that you do just that. Have a nice day, Breeze said as he turned to leave.

A small wind had come through, bringing the most wonderful scent of vanilla and morning dew. Warren’s cock had gone from soft and to the right, to hard and painfully pressing into his zipper. His hyena screamed in his mind, Mate! Warren was smelling his mate! But, who? Was it one of the smaller men? No. Warren didn’t think so. Hell, Warren had felt his interest stir from the second he had set eyes on the gorgeous hyena shifter, and wasn’t that what the mated couples had said when they had met. Something about it not just being their mate’s scent, but the pull to that one person?

I don’t know what you’re thinking right now, hyena, but I suggest you stop. Breeze has already told you to leave, and we will not allow you to enter our lands, said the man Breeze had indicated to be Lovett.

Warren lifted his chin in defiance. And what would a raccoon think he can do to a hyena?

Nothing, but the man standing before you can do much. Now, go back to where you belong. We don’t need you or anyone else bringing trouble to our doorstep, Lovett stated, standing firmly in front of the house.

Warren wanted nothing more than to go over that line, and show Lovett what he thought about him and his threats, but he didn’t. It seemed as if his mate called the men here family, and if that were the case, Warren would never earn Breeze’s trust or favor. No, he needed to do what needed to be done, and then figure out a way to get his mate to accept him.

Giving a sad snort, Warren sipped his now warm beer. Yeah, that worked out well for you.

Hey, Warren, are you alright? Ziggy asked as he walked up the steps to the main house.

Shrugging, Warren took a swig of his beer, then answered, I don’t really know how to answer that one, Zig. Sorry.

Want to talk about it? I’m a pretty good listener, Ziggy said, sitting on the other porch swing across from him.

Nothing much to say. I met my mate, and he doesn’t want me. Now I’m here. Thanks, I feel so much better now, Warren said sarcastically as he took another drink. Maybe he should switch to something stronger. This wasn’t doing anything for him, and now was as good a time as any to
