Expecting the Unexpected: The 2020 Rule

An introduction to the second edition of Breathe to Perform

As I write these words I am reminded of my favorite seat in the corner of Gregory’s Coffee shop on 7th Avenue in New York City. This is where I worked on the first edition of Breathe to Perform.

I went to Manhattan to work on the first draft because I’ve always loved how loud the city was. Quiet cafes in noisy and chaotic environments are my favorite places to write.

I never imagined how quiet the streets of New York would soon become.

I wrote the first edition of this book in a different world.

It was written before a respiratory pandemic swept the globe. It was written before the concept of a quarantine ever entered my mind. It was written before we wore face masks to go into the grocery store.

I wrote Breathe to Perform to share tools that I’d found valuable in navigating a rapidly changing world-and then the world changed.

Throughout the events of 2020 the exercises throughout this book proved more valuable than ever.

As the world grew more chaotic and unpredictable by the minute my breath practice served as an anchor in a sea of uncertainty.

My goal for this second edition of Breathe to Perform is to reach more people with a simple toolkit that allows them to access the physiological anchors within them.

Physiology-the way that the human body functions-is the tie that binds us to one another regardless of our personal beliefs.

Beliefs are the story that we tell about the world.

Physiology is the story that the world tells about us.

Physiology is the foundation on which our mental landscape is built.

Emotion, attention, focus, and perspective are all reflections of what is taking place inside our bodies.

This is why we wake up feeling unstoppable one day and anxious the next.

It is why our energy dips and soars throughout the span of 24 hours.

It is why our perception changes even when our circumstances remain the same.

Understanding ourselves requires understanding the processes within our body that influence how we see and experience the world around us.

There is one process that stands out among our most basic survival needs for being both automatic and within our control.

    This process is our breath.

We are either in a stage of inhalation or exhalation throughout every moment of our lives.

These two phases of breathing have an impact on the position of our bones, the beating of our heart, the function of our brains, and the state of our mind.

Inhalation is associated with focus, memory, and attention.

Exhalation is associated with relaxation and recovery.

These are just two of the ways that our bodies change with every breath we take.

Understanding how breathing impacts our body provides a powerful tool to control our mental and physical state.

Managing our state when the world seems unmanageable is one of the most critical skills of our time.

21st century fitness is more mental than it is physical.

Our need to run a marathon for survival purposes is far less likely than our need to control stress and anxiety levels, retain focus in a world of constant distractions, and build clear paths towards our goals on terrain that is constantly shifting beneath our feet.

Yet, as the events of 2020 reminded us, the need to prioritize our physical health is as critical as ever.

To build a system that strengthens both the mind and the body begins by recognizing the critical link between the two.

The question for many people is where to start the process of reclaiming our mental and physical fitness.

Beginning by paying more attention to our breathing does not require us to add anything to our lives, other than presence.

By simply turning our focus to something that we are already doing we give ourselves an opportunity to take greater control of our lives anywhere, anytime.

If you can not observe something as simple as your breath you have no chance of observing your anger, boredom, or fear. These are much stormier and far more difficult.

    -Yuval Noah Harrari

Learning more about my own breathing has been the most powerful tool that I’ve acquired through nearly a decade of coaching and competing as an ultramarathon athlete.

It has helped me navigate the uncertainties of starting and sustaining a small business, especially this past year.

This book is not filled with complex breathing exercises. Instead, it contains simple exercises for complex times.

Breathe to Perform was not written for the aspiring breathing expert to gain new knowledge.

It was written for those who haven’t yet explored the power of their own breathing, as well as those who have and are seeking a simple
