    Chapter 1 - Enriching the Lives of the Elderly: Understanding Their Hierarchy of Needs

    When the subject of the hierarchy of needs arises, psychologist Abraham Maslow may often come to mind. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a pyramid that indicates the levels of needs for humans to reach their full potential. While the general premise of the pyramid ranges from basic physiological needs to safety needs, to love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization, it is important to revisit what the given hierarchy means as people begin to age.

    Individuals’ needs change with age, forming their own respective definitions depending on shifting priorities. Although Maslow’s existing hierarchy can be used as somewhat of a basis, thorough analysis of what the elderly truly need is important in ensuring that their lives remain enriched even in their twilight years.

    Shifting needs may come in the form of new health demands, due to changes in physical capacities, bodily functions, and other illnesses. However, one must also consider changes in emotional and mental needs as well. These may impact their physical health, and vice versa. Aside from these considerations, older adults have other concerns, particularly in terms of their relationships, routine, self-worth, and sense of stability or security.

    To better address the elderly’s hierarchy of needs, it may be advisable to look at the bigger picture for holistic solutions.

    Physiological Needs

    At its core, physiological needs are the most basic things seniors cannot live without. Besides the given food and drink, shelter is a main priority as well. For older individuals, the choice of shelter is extremely important, especially given that the proper choice of environment is essential in making sure that they will age in comfort and
