Like most things in my life, this book started out as something quite different, and not as the book you now hold. My background is in US History and my dissertation was on concepts regarding war- and patriotically-themed comics in the US. While I was writing my dissertation, I had the great opportunity to go with the Canadian Battlefields tour, that year organized by both the University of New Brunswick and the Cantigny First Infantry Division Museum. Those folks are still close friends.
As I was finishing up my research, I ran across some stories from True Comics, a historically based comic book produced by Parents’ Magazine as a way to teach as well as entertain readers on aspects of history. As with any business-minded publication, they included a wider audience, in this case, Canadian stories, to appeal to the Canadian readers. I had initially compiled these stories into this book to send to them. One friend, Matt Symes, noted that I should write some historical context to the stories to flesh it
