INTRODUCTION
THE CHALLENGE
Discovering Generosity
Over the next few weeks, we will be facing the challenge of how we can learn to give more generously. But if we want to ‘Discover God’s Amazing Generosity’, we must start by making an honest evaluation of our current attitude towards our possessions.
Money is a pressing issue for most people. A great many of us spend a huge amount of time making money, spending money, worrying about money, fighting over money or simply trying to protect our money. And, of course, we dare not ignore the alarming statistics that tell a story of rapidly increasing consumer debt, saving rates that have ‘fallen off of a cliff’ and conflicts over money that are the cause of so much unhappiness and discontent.
It need not be like this. Money and possessions can have a ‘cancerous effect’ on our lives, but it is possible to embrace a far healthier lifestyle. We can make changes; changes that will radically transform our lives for the better. This will inevitably mean cultivating a generous spirit.
Many of us avoid discussing money issues, but it is important to realise that talking can prove very helpful. More than that, planning can become the key to financial freedom.
‘Making the Change’ will help you discover a new set of priorities – priorities that will set you free to become generous, both now and in the future. In so doing, you will experience the abundant life Jesus promised His disciples.
You have already taken the first step to achieving this, whether you’re trying to get out of debt or simply wanting to devise a plan for the future. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to lay a foundation that will last a lifetime. We can all invest in a brighter tomorrow by ‘Making the Change’ today. But be aware of this: our relationship to money inevitably involves our relationship with God, because in the final analysis it reveals the things we value most.
Let’s face it. We are all innately materialistic. We instinctively want more and more. And there is only one antidote to materialism: generosity. Every act of generosity is a spiritual victory and will help us become more like the God we see revealed in Jesus. For He is nothing if not infinitely generous, and He expects us to reflect His image in the way we live and behave.
It is our prayer that these times together will prove to be times of transformation, a transformation that will inspire us to worship the God who has given us everything we possess.
THE COURSE
Making the Change
This course has been shaped by the recognition that Christians acknowledge Jesus as ‘Lord’. In other words, we recognise that everything we possess ultimately belongs to Him and that we will have to give an account of what we’ve done on the day we meet Him, because meet Him we certainly will.
In essence, ‘Making the Change’ consists of four interactive sessions, each of which will offer you an opportunity to explore and discuss a range of video and biblical material. Each session has a separate introduction that needs to be studied in order for you to get the most out of this course. You will also find it helpful to review the notes and revisit the videos and biblical passages
