In this lens I’ll show you how to better define and establish your standpoint so it becomes the foundation for your business... but first let’s look at the standpoint of this book and what it contains. At first, this may seem like an extention of the introduction (which it is) however, the hidden meaning will begin to emerge the deeper we go. A framework your own venture can be modelled on will be revealed as the pieces of the puzzle come together.

    Why The Simple Manifesto?

We are living in a fast-paced, complex world where we are constantly bombarded with new messages, new information, new systems, new tools... the list goes on. While the new stuff is pitched to us in a way that highlights all the benefits of the new shiny thing, often times it adds complexity to our lives and restricts simplicity.

We are searching for simplicity – for an easier way of life. We dream of a tree or sea-change. We dream of working less and earning more so we can spend more time with our family or friends. We dream of retirement when we can do what we want, when we want. Whatever it is that excites and motivates you, you can start to experience now.

Many entrepreneurial people choose to start a business for the freedom it can provide – only to find they are free to work whatever 80 hours a week they like! Instead of them owning a business, the business owns them. Busy-ness is the enemy of business. Let’s wage war against your enemy. People talk about busy-ness like it’s something to boast about. They brag how busy they are. What if you challenged this conventional thinking? What if you reversed the order? What if you turned it inside out, upside down? What would it mean to your business and personal life?

Let me challenge you right now. Most of us have read multiple ‘bestselling’ business books yet, statistically, few of us apply what we learn. You can accept or reject my ideas and principles. However, they won’t make a bit of difference in your business unless you do something about it. You may choose to reject everything I say. You may believe pursuing complexity is the best way forward for your business. That’s fine! Do something about it. Let your passionate rejection of what I’m saying propel you forward.

I’m going to presume most readers will believe in the ideas and principles of this book. Chances are, if you picked up this book you are a creative thinker full of ideas and possibilities. You may not be short on great ideas but getting them all done is the challenge. It’s a battle for many entrepreneurs. It is my intention to stir up more and more thoughts and ideas as you read on. Don’t let this overwhelm you. Stay focused on whatever you are working on at the time. I’m not suggesting that you ignore new ideas. It’s not possible or encouraged to shut down your creativity. Instead, create a brain dump for yourself. It can be as low-tech, or as high-tech as you like. It does not matter. Jot down any new thoughts and ideas you have so they are available for you later, but don’t consume your thinking right now.

Sit on your ideas for a while and the best of them will continue to resurface. When it feels like the idea has you more than you have an idea, it’s a good sign that it’s something worth pursuing.

It’s time to leave your comfort zone. It’s like a swimming pool. You may be reluctant to jump right in, despite multiple people reassuring you that ‘the water’s beautiful’. However, once you take the courage to step in, you acclimatise and soon start to enjoy the pool. You forget your initial hesitation and begin to tell others that ‘the water’s beautiful’. Let me reassure you, the water is beautiful, so let’s jump right in!

If your business is already in progress, implementing a completely new system will not be the best investment of your time and resources. This book is designed for you. If you’re starting out, you probably need quick cash flow that can sustain you while you make further improvements. This book is also for you. It doesn’t recommend implementing new systems that are going to cost massive amounts of time or money. It’s about looking for small tweaks that take up minimal time but can be leveraged for maximum impact, fast.

We are not going to look at stories and case-studies from large corporations that you, as a small business leader or entrepreneur can’t replicate. We won’t be talking about how Nike, Virgin, Apple, or any other super successful company, run their business. I enjoy reading about and learning from these companies, however I also understand they are usually exceptional cases, and not what the majority of businesses can expect to experience by following a particular philosophy. We will be looking at unconventional ideas and new methods to create your own ideal business and lifestyle.

This book is not a ‘rags-to-riches’ story about how one guy started his business in his garage with $20 in his pocket and a credit card debt of thousands and turned his life around with a new idea or system that you too can implement. While I don’t doubt that these stories happen, they are exceptional. There are many more stories of people in similar situations who failed miserably. They just don’t write books! Like many people, I enjoy reading success stories. However we can’t use them as a reliable model to run our own businesses.

This book provides an unconventional way of thinking, a method to experience frequent, incremental improvement. A way to minimise your time investment and maximise your profitability while doing what you love. There are three key principles every single strategy in this book should be measured by.

    Will this save me time?

    Will this increase my profit?

Will this help create my dream business?

Keep these questions in the front of your mind, ahead of any strategy. They will help you quickly eliminate tasks from your to-do list that keep you trapped in the busy-work mindset.

These questions are universal yet the reasons why they are important will be unique to you and your values. You may want to make more money so you can support charities you are passionate about. Maybe you want to work fewer hours so you can spend more time with your family. Whatever you enjoy doing and are most passionate about will create the most meaning and purpose in your life – that’s your dream
