Words from The Heart - Kala Jordan-Lindsey
Look Through
Look through my eyes
not at my eyes
Look through my face
not at my face
Look through my hair
not at my hair
Look through my clothes
not at my clothes
Look through my moves
not at my moves
Look through my heart
not at my heart
Look through my eyes
not at my eyes
Listen
Listen through my voice
not at my voice
-Embrace me without the misconception of what you see
I’m Black and I’m Proud
No wonder a decade ago
I couldn’t say this
I’m Black and I’m Proud
I wasn’t confident
nor was I loud
I held my head down
way to the ground
and walked in circles
in and around town
around and around
until I continued to drown
my precious and powerful sound
I wasn’t some old clown
I just preferred not to make
a loud sound,
but I thank God for opening
my eyes
Yes
I was found
out from what was holding
my confidence
buried, deep, down, in the ground,
but ladies and gentlemen
I’m no longer that young woman
I’m a woman
I’m humbled
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
with black, Indian hair,
a powerful flare seen through the air,
along with black, slanted eyes
with brown and beautiful, sexy thighs
There’s no doubt
I’m more wise
to what life is all about
I’ll continue to rise
And you too, will soar high
So, don’t give up and forget
the blessing you are outside
and deep within
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
and confident that I was born
on purpose, with purpose,
and for a greater purpose
not to walk around with my head
hidden and down
with a smirk and unpleasant frown
carrying a bucket of cries
because of all these lies
running down my beautiful,
black, green, gray, and brown eyes
My sistas, this message
is for you too
Don’t be intimidated by the color of your
brown, soft, and beautiful skin
we’re God’s creation
and will continue to rise
So, open your beautiful, brown eyes
and embrace the lies
without rolling your eyes
Honey, walk and rise
without a veil
a dark and real seal that only
kills
Chill and remember to keep it real
without hate and anger
in your hearts and tattooed on your fingers
nor resting on your chest
like a shirt on a hanger
But, instead, desire to live right
in God’s sight
and rest
while striving to do your best
You’ll overcome this test
So, don’t stress
Remember, we’re still blessed
Pray and let go
and let God
take care of the rest
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
without worldly exposure, news feed, and living all over
ridin’ in the newest Range Rover,
but grateful and content with the gifts
and blessings I was created and born with
like my big, black, oriental and beautiful eyes,
and powerful thighs
that catches my husband’s brown and attractive eyes
Yes, ladies and gentlemen
We will rise
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
with gratitude
as wide as earth’s latitude,
for His word, which strengthens me, daily
to live wise as I write these rhymes,
for my wonderfully made thighs,
Oh, what a gift that requires a lot of exercise,
and for my black and beautiful hair
that attracts my husband
Yes, ladies
He loves to stare at my
attractive flare
beyond the color of my hair
Especially, when I’m in the chair
And he loves to joke with me
As if he was a clown from the South Florida Fair
So, to all my Black sistas
Embrace yourselves
beyond just the color of your wigs and braided hair
And remember, don’t be offended
I don’t recommend it
Just let’em stare
as you dance and groove,
perform your best moves,
and wave your hands in the air
like you just don’t care
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
as I stand tall, humbled, and continue to rise
with untouchable hope and faith
and a heart living for God’s sake
I’m certain I wasn’t born to debate,
but to inspire and encourage,
and unclog my heart
to motivate others not to hate,
but to love the One, who gave His life for us
Yes, the One who sits high
and looks low from up above
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
I wasn’t always loud
But, today, I’m standing up and standing out
with my loud, visible voice
because God fueled my choice
not to give up,
but to embrace my remorse
by encouraging others to make a better choice
To sit up and speak up
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud,
and humbled with confidence
I also embraced my ponytails
and little, cute curls
though I hid behind the clouds
and lived around those who were wild,
with my bright, beautiful, and contagious smile
I was the one, who loved to run for miles
and miles
with my cool and unique style
I didn’t care who was on the aisle
I was determined to unleash my beautiful, brown,
and contagious smile
Knowing that one day
I’d experience true peace
beyond walking down, the church aisle
Today, I can finally smile,
I’m no longer that child,
but Black, woman
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
despite my small crew
I thank God
because He knew what all I could chew
He knew the colors on my shoes
wasn’t meant to attract and attach everyone
I thought I knew,
but honey child
I’m confident to say that, today
I’m no longer in the clouds
I embrace my beautiful, purposeful,
and precious smile
without worry of who’s watching me
on the aisle
I walk right with a glow
that’s bright
as a brown skin woman, wife, and mother
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
as a teen I was still asleep
spiritually weak and beat
as I cooked and microwaved my wheats
Lord knows, somedays, I was beat
as I walked a distance in the heat
while covering my eyes
because I was afraid to speak up
and rise
while rockin’ and rollin’
with none of God’s
sheep
I held my head down on the beat
and fell asleep
without a call nor a beep
while reminiscing about when I was child
and how I loved to run laps and miles
with my bright and beautiful smile,
which kept me encouraged not discouraged
But honey child
I’m confident to say that today,
I can truly smile
I thank God for blessing me
to finally walk down the isle
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
as a woman I preferred certain isles
and hide my bold and powerful smile
in the midst of all my trials
as I sometimes didn’t know who to dial
So, I hid my habits, hang ups, hustles, hassles,
desires, dreams, thoughts, ideas,
and words from my heart behind the scenes
with my other dreams
in my sexy and blue, skinny jeans
thinking I’d never be seen,
but Lord knows I had so much to say
I was uncertain
as I sat behind the curtains
But honey child
I’m confident to say that today,
I can finally smile
Yes
I’m Black and I’m proud
because today, I’m stepping up and stepping out
with inspiration from God, who uplifted me
to make the right choice
and to no longer be afraid
to share my visible voice
with my beautiful and brown glow
I’m not speaking nor writing for show
My confidence is in God
He certainly knows
Here’s my true identity
It’s now exposed
I thank God that His Son rose
Yes
I’m Black, humbled, and I’m proud
with my sweet, brown and blemished skin
that also sinned
But God still made a way
for me to win
over such sins
with opened eyes
Today, I’m wise
and faith that I’ll continue to rise
with my unique and visible voice
I thank God for blessing me
to make this powerful choice
as I sit, smile, and rejoice
while thanking Him for revealing
His amazing voice
I’m Black and I’m proud
Yes
-I’m a grateful, blessed, and confident, Black woman with brown skin
My Pretty Tone Skin
My pretty tone skin
Never blown by the wind
Smooth like buttercream
Unbreakable and sweet within
My pretty tone skin
Huh, I know I’m sexy men
On the outside and in
I’m thankful for my soft and beautiful,
caramel skin
I know I’m attractive
and will always win
My pretty tone skin is
deeper than my outside skin,
but my heart is what matters
It speaks louder
Yes, from deep within
My pretty tone skin
is more powerful than the most expensive eye glass lens
yet nothing, except for my heart, which lays deep within
And I’m not perfect,
but I am valuable and worth it
So, men don’t intentionally sin
Yes, I have a god-fearing man
He’s my husband, a father, and special, loving best friend
Every day and all day, I say thank you, Lord
and Amen
Christ is my all-time joy within
My pretty tone skin
is far more meaningful than that fly-looking Benz
Today, I see through a different lens
not with a gain to take and grab all tens,
but to praise, glorify, and honor the One I live in
Yes, I’m beautiful without it
and will always win
My pretty tone skin
is not identical to the color of your chin
We’ve all walked in and out, and through different doors
and some have been called names like pimps
and whores
as they continue to bleed with really bad
contagious sores
But, don’t worry
God will continue to open your doors
and will bless you to soar
So, in this skin
I know with the Lord I will always win
My life is not depending on obtaining all tens
I’m blessed with a peace of mind
and with a loving and caring family
I’m doing just fine
without red and sparkling wine
So, to all the men
I know you looked at me
through the cold wind
at my pretty tone skin
I’m used to hearing the brothers in the city saying, Amen
And I’ve heard so many ask,
could they get in
in my tight, fitted pants
I sometimes think, if only I didn’t give that one a chance
But, I’m wiser now and thank God for
another chance
Today, I’m forever grateful and blessed
to be married
to a loving and god-fearing man
Oh, what an advance and special enhance
I’m loved and in love with this amazing and handsome man
He loves me for who I am
and appreciates and adores my pretty tone skin
-Embrace and protect your beautiful, brown skin
The Color of My Skin
So, the color of my skin
I’ve always wondered
Why does it offend?
Could it be because I’m Black and beautiful
and stay ready to win
Or is it the way I walk, talk, and hold up
my brown chin
I have no worries nor am I afraid
of my true story
I just give God all the praise, honor,
and glory
without the worry of who hears my story
He’s indeed, my song
and true story
I no longer sit down and frown
and speed on the highways
because I’m so much in a hurry
Yes, this is my true story
I was born to win beyond my beautiful, brown,
and caramel skin,
which is far more precious and powerful
than what you ever thought of me
deep, down, and within
And yes, I’ve sinned, but not because
the color of my skin,
but because the devil didn’t want me
to win
like Daniel in the lion’s den
His enemy never wanted him to win
Just as you and I
as we walk
in our true skin
God looks at the heart,
deep, down, and within
The color of my skin
doesn’t have it all together
but, as a child of God
I’m blessed with favor
as much as a heap of weather
with blemishes deep within
and all over my pretty tone skin
I’m thankful for the One
I live in,
who motivates me not to sin
He continues to bless me to win
beyond the color of my skin,
which doesn’t define what’s created on the outside
and built within
I know my heart is beating,
because the One I walk in
He continues to strengthen my hope
and faith and blesses me
to stay focused in Him
I live with opened eyes as God continues to bless me to rise
I know it’s deeper than what I walk in
so, don’t sin
if you’re trying to win
Don’t give in,
so you can taste sin
If you live obedient, you will always win
I’m just encouraging you
with my true story
and testifying why God gets all the glory
Don’t be afraid to tell your powerful and touching stories
You’re beautiful and bold,
and will be blessed
to grow old
I’m not in a hurry
I’m here to listen
As you speak your true story
Lord knows I give Him all the glory
I refuse to burry my story
So, I’m more confident today,
as I walk in this precious color of my skin
with a clear conscious and
renewed mindset of who I live in
I’m certain that I will always win
So, to all my
