Dedication
This book is dedicated to my parents who have always been supportive of me even when they thought I was frankly nuts and to the many masterful teachers who have influenced how I think about life/health/happiness and to my student Dylan for asking questions.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
Thanks to the Vegan Community worldwide for its continued inspiration and resources, to Jerome Ford for taking the back cover photo and to Janice Taylor who is not only a lovely and gifted opera star, but who also is a computer graphics goddess!
Forward
I first met David Giardina while he was researching this timely, eye opening book and filming his upcoming documentary "Probable Cause". I flew to New York to be an important part of that film. During my time there, I learned a lot about David’s sincerity, ambition and most of all his great compassion. Since then we have become great friends.
David is a very special person. I have observed him carefully over some time now and I can honestly say, he walks his talk and I trust him and believe in his work completely. He really is one of the last idealists who is not controlled by money nor fear and he will make a difference in this world.
This book that you hold in your hands, A Banana in my Pocket,
is the result of David’s extensive research and work on the subject of health and well-being. His desire is to help others by imparting what he has discovered. You will find the book easy to understand and full of fantastic solutions to health concerns. I am using these superlatives because frankly I am excited about the changes this book can bring to you if you follow David’s simple and practical suggestions.
With A Banana In My Pocket
you will begin to understand the simplicity of health and how the professional health care system largely misleads, brainwashes and abuses us. You will learn about the lies we are lead to believe about health and illness and how to get out of the trap of manipulation.
The truth is that Professional Health care is all about the profit and not at all about the patient, the cure or even caring about the suffering individual. David’s words cut through the complexities of our healthcare, or better said, disease care system, and get right to the point. He is certainly not afraid to say what he thinks!
Congratulations to my valuable friend David on this important book and congratulations to you dear reader, for taking the first step towards a healthier and happier future!
Warmest regards,
Dr Leonard Coldwell NMD ND PHD

WHO IS THIS GUY?
banana clouds picNature, time and patience are the three greatest physicians.

Have you ever had a dream that your body is healing itself completely and perfectly at every moment? Have you ever had a dream that your body doesn’t need any kind of medicines nor therapies to prevent or rid itself of illnesses? Have you ever had a dream that most of what you’ve been taught about health and disease from TV, newspapers, your family, friends and doctors may not be absolutely, infallibly true? Have you ever had a dream that you are limitless and have no needs and that health, happiness, safety and fulfillment are your birthright AUTOMATICALLY? If you HAVE dreamt any of these things then no doubt many have called you crazy! But have no fear. You’re doing OK! If you have NOT dreamed these things, I invite you to dare to dream! For within these dreams is our TRUTH.
I invite you to come with me on a journey to awareness, health and wholeness. But before you accept any trips from strangers, let me introduce myself!
My name is David. I was born in 1962. I come from a family background steeped solidly in conventional western medicine. My grandmother was an RN. My great grandfather was a surgeon who graduated from Yale Medical School. My other great grandfather was a doctor who founded the radiology department in our town’s hospital in the early 1930’s. My great aunt was a microbiologist with an advanced degree from MIT who ran the state government laboratories for 30 years. My grandfather was a chemistry teacher. Another great aunt was a biology teacher. As for me? I’m an award-winning (honest!) independent filmmaker, a life coach, a big band crooner, an artist’s model and a raw food vegan. HUH?
Yes, I know, I sure missed the medical/scientific boat! But that fact did not stop me from becoming my own doctor
as it were - and literally the best doctor I’ve ever had. This journey for me started quite early and inexplicably.
Like most people of my generation, and since, I was raised to accept conventional wisdom regarding health and sickness: When you have a cold, you take medicine. When you have a headache, you do the same and so on with more serious illnesses. When the medicine doesn’t seem to work, you have surgery. I was raised to eat the Standard American Diet (or SAD), which included processed and cooked foods and sizeable amounts of meat, eggs, dairy, fish. But there was a little problem: For whatever Fate’s reasoning, I simply never liked eating meat, eggs, dairy or fish. And let me tell you, with a father who is from Italy and with a meat-and-potatoes Anglo/Irish mother - this was completely sacrilegious! I got through those days nobly enough and then one day when I was in my early 30’s I said to myself, "Hey wait a minute. I’m an adult now (trust me, it can happen) and I don’t have to eat anything I don’t want to eat. So I gave up beef, pork, poultry and I became a
vegetarian".
I felt noticeably better in a matter of weeks. There was not as much intestinal turmoil after meals and I had more energy in general. "Wonderful, I thought.
I’m as good as it gets." But it got better.
In the early 1990’s I began hearing about people called vegans
. It took me a while to understand exactly what vegans
were. It turned out that they were a big step ahead of me. Vegans not only left meat, poultry
