    Trout Perch and Sand Rollers

    Taxonomy

    Like all fish, trout-perch and sand rollers are animals of the phylum Chordata. Chordates are animals with backbones. Amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are also classified as chordates.

    A convenient old classification places all fish in a class called Pisces. More recently, bony fish are placed in a class called Osteichthyes. Another classification places ray-finned fish in a class called Actinopterygii. Trout-perch and sand rollers fit nicely into any one of these three classes.

    Trout-perch and sand rollers belong to the order Percopsiformes. This order contains three classes: Percopsidae, Aphredoderidae (the pirate perch), and Amblyopsidae (the cave fish).

    Trout perch and sand rollers are the only extant fish in the family Percopsidae. The scientific name of the sand roller is Percopsis transmontana (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1892). The scientific name of the trout-perch is Percopsis omiscomaycus (Walbaum, 1792).
