    CHAPTER 1

NYC POLICE OVERWHELMED WITH CALLS FROM FAMIIES OF GROWING NUMBER OF MISSING the newspaper headline said.  There were very few newspapers in the 24th century. Mostly they were conspiracy rags printed by less than mentally stable persons.  By the 24th century the United States was a fractured and third world country run by wealthy oligarchs largely controlled by the lone super power left in the world, Russia.  The fall had started after Russia was able to elect a Manchurian Politician to the presidency in the mid-teens of the 21st century.  From then on the United States was a failed state with an out of control government run

by a dictator who the history books of the 21st century refer to as the Orange Menace.  His name has been lost over the centuries of failure, lost to history as little more than a footnote for the beginning of the end.

Blue Blaze threw the paper in the trash can next to his desk.  He had been contacted by the NYC police for help.  He had long ago been a NYC detective. All NYC and every city in the crumbling United States had been robots along with all of the armed forces.  But after time the oligarchs noticed the robots began to actualize, began to think their own thoughts as though they were human.  It was decided at that point to put all robots out to pasture to fend for themselves as if they were humans. Many were destroyed by the government, seen as a threat to humanity.

Blaze decided he could do nothing besides solve mysteries and became a private detective used predominantly by the very oligarchs of wealth who had put him and his fellow kind into retirement.

What the hell do you think I will be able to do for you? he asked into the phone.

I need to get something solved here. I can’t take the calls and protests anymore, the head of the New York City police, Chief Brand said.

I only take paying cases and not for any governmental entity.  I prefer to bilk those rich bastards who wanted me deprogrammed once upon a time, Blaze said.
