About this ebook

Cal Brennan raised horses, some of the best horses in the area. He had been working at it for fifteen years and then he met the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She lassoed his heart like he had been lassoing horses. She gave him two wonderful babies, but one day that all changed.
When Cal Brennan topped the rise and saw his house in a black pile of rubble his heart dropped. No man should ever have to ride into the site he did that day. He found his wife laying in the yard badly burned and barely alive. She was alive enough to be able to describe the men responsible and give him the name of the one that appeared to be the leader...Lucas Greer.
When the grieving stopped he rode out after Greer and the other four men with him. After weeks of hunting he found out that it would take more money than he had to continue the search. He considered selling his horse ranch but a chance meeting with a bank robber changed his mind. He was given the reward for bringing the man in and there he saw a pile of wanted posters and a new way to finance his search.
His hatred was eating him to the point that he lost all interest in anything else. When he tackled a pair of tough brothers he met another bounty hunter and joined forces for the hunt. When the capture was made he was double crossed and left in the desert to die.
Cal was not one to give up and when he made his way out he found his ex-partner and got his share of the money along with a little justice. The trail for Greer was a cold one until he stumbled on a piece of information that gave him new hope.
On his way to the area he witnessed two men shoot down a man and woman beside their wagon and managed to shoot one of them. He didn’t realize it but this was a turning point in his life. The man was riding one of his stolen horses.
The woman lived long enough to get a promise from him to take her baby to her sister’s house.
He fulfilled the promise and delivered the baby but found that the woman was in danger of having her ranch taken from her. She was expecting help from her brother and sister in law but they were buried back on the prairie.
Now, as well as her ranch problems, she had a baby to contend with but that was no concern of Cal’s. He was ready to ride off, until the bullies showed up to force her to sell and he took a hand on her side.
The ranch needed a lot of work as she had no hands left and he advised her to sell, take the baby and move on...but he did not know Rachel Burns. He tried to leave, but his conscience would not let him. She turned his life around until the day he had concrete evidence where Lucas Greer was.

    Chapter 1

Cal Brennan was a happy man as he neared his home. He had enough money in his pocket to keep the ranch running for another year, and his wife and family waiting for him. Raising horses was a difficult business, but after fifteen years he was finally getting the recognition he deserved as a horse breeder.

In a place where almost everyone else was raising cattle, he was always the odd man out. There was no shortage of horses but there was a shortage of exceptional horses and that is what he raised. He had an army contract and many people were learning about the quality of his horses and life was good.

Duffy Baxter and he had just delivered the small herd to Fort Elroy and were gladly paid by the quartermaster. The army knew that he raised good stock but most of all they required no breaking, this was a good thing for them because most of the soldiers could barely ride a horse let alone break a rough bronco.

Duffy had ridden with him since he showed up wounded at his doorstep five years before. He was nineteen at the time and had been involved in a holdup that went wrong. The wound he received was bad enough that he almost died and as Cal doctored him back to life the whole story came out.

He had been trying to make his way in life, but without parents to guide him he easily fell in with the wrong company. He really didn’t want to be involved in the holdup but he had no way to back out that saved face. To a young man saving face and proving his worth was more important than taking the chance he did.

He was the only one of five who made it out of town and since they had four of the robbers and all the money, getting this one did not seem that important. The posse saw that he was badly wounded and left so much blood that they figured he would die on his own in the wilderness, but life has a funny way of making turns and the turn that it gave Duffy Baxter was a turn into Cal Brennan’s ranch.

Cal kept him and doctored him until he recovered, all the while, listening to his story. He felt that he needed a break so he gave him the choice of staying on the ranch and going straight or leaving to continue his life of crime. He chose the ranch and they never spoke of it again.

As they neared the last rise before his ranch he took a deep breath. He always liked this part of his trips…the coming home. This time when he topped the rise he let that deep breath out suddenly. He saw his house in a black pile of rubble and his heart dropped. He spurred his horse down the gentle hill and into the yard.

He spotted the two bodies lying on the ground in front of the burned-out house. As he drew nearer he could see that either was moving and he feared the worst. The first one he turned over was his wife’s sister Candice, who had come to be with Sarah while he was gone. When he saw that there was no hope for her he raced to Sarah who was laying on her side.

He rolled her over carefully and she let out a moan. What he saw almost made him turn away. She was badly burned, almost to the point that he could barely recognize her. When he moved her she let out a moan and opened her eyes.

He started to take her in his arms, but she spoke through her burned lips.

    "No…don’t move…me!

He realized then the pain she must be going through and he withdrew his hands and let her lay back down.

She saw him as he looked over her and at the burned house.

    "They’re…gone Cal…I tr..ied.

The tears welled up and ran down her burned cheeks. He looked her over more closely now and saw her burned arms and legs. Her dress was almost burned off her body and was sticking to her flesh. He knew she had tried to save the children and this was the result of that attempt.

He wanted so badly to hold her in his arms, but he saw the pain his touch had caused her. She raised her arm and touched him even though it gave her great pain.

    They’re…gone. No time…Cal…listen…five men…I heard…one…call.. the.. lea..der Lucas. Get them...Cal,

She closed her eyes and breathed her last breath. She had done what she wanted to do…live long enough to tell someone who had done this. He watched, hoping she would take another breath, but in his heart he knew she had lived as long as she could. He sat there staring at her and then the burned-out house until Duffy came racing in with the wagon.

He jumped down and after looking around he went into the burnt timber and ashes to look for the children. When he came back out he looked at Cal and shook his head. He was stunned by the scene. A scene of a devastated family, a family that he had grown to think of as his own.

Cal broke him from his trance and sent him to the next ranch over to get Candice’s husband Robert. Robert and Candice were close neighbors as well as relatives and friends, and he thought of how devastating the news would be to him as he sat there beside Sarah and waited.

He looked down at the woman who was once so beautiful and thought about their meeting. He had spent most of his adult years building his horse ranch and it left him little time for the other pleasures of life, like dancing and meeting women. So he even surprised himself when he accepted Candice’s invitation to the dance.

He was just riding through town coming back from a delivery when she hailed him down on the street. He liked Candice, as well as her husband Robert, a lot. They were his nearest neighbors and Robert worked as hard as he did to make a go of their ranch. Candice worked right alongside him in all kinds of weather, but when they came to visit she always seemed to have time to make his favorite apple pie.

Any time he did have a fleeting thought of a woman, he thought he would want one like her. She was made for this country and took as much interest in making a success of the ranch as Robert did. When the times were tough, like they were a lot, she always had a bubbly attitude that seem to lift them all.

They had never had any children but he was sure she would have been a wonderful mother. He sent Duffy home and went and got a room at the hotel. He had no other clothes to change into but he washed up as best he could…he was not planning on staying long anyway, he had just accepted the offer to please Candice.

When he entered the hall he stepped quietly to the right and stood against the wall hoping that no one would notice him. As he looked around he saw the most beautiful woman he had ever seen…and she was talking to Candice. He held his hat in his hands…and then they were coming toward him. He was almost in a panic as they approached, but Candice took the lead as usual.

Cal, this is my sister Sarah. She just came out for a visit.

Then with a sweep of her dress, she turned away.

I’ll leave you two to get acquainted.

Cal held his composure as best he could although he was panicking inside. Sarah recognized his discomfort and after an awkward moment, like her sister, she took charge.

Would you care to dance Mister Brennan?

He stammered for a second almost in fear. Why was he afraid of this woman?

    I’m sorry, I don’t dance ma’am.

She was undaunted by his reply.

Then perhaps Mister Brennan you would escort me outside for some refreshing night air.

She stepped over and took her shawl off a hook and he realized it was not a question as he took the shawl she handed to him.

Yes ma’am, I’d be pleasured to do that.

She turned her back to him and he stood there looking at her bare shoulders, thinking how soft her skin looked. She turned her head to him and he blushed at being caught staring.

It goes around my shoulders, Mister Brennan.

He didn’t see her smile as he draped the shawl around her, being careful not to touch her bare shoulders. She stepped toward the door and stood there until he got the message and jumped in front of her to open the door. Then they stepped out into the cool night air and she stopped and took a deep breath.

Isn’t the air wonderful out here Mister Brennan?

He stood beside her afraid to look at her, almost like if he did she would disappear.

Yes ma’am, I been breathing this air for a long time, but it feels especially good tonight.

She looked at him and smiled.

Do you think we could walk over to the river Mister Brennan?

He looked over toward the river and the way that was lighted by the moonlight.

Yes ma’am I think we could do that.

They started walking together and when she touched his hand with hers he quickly pulled his back.

They continued walking slowly and then she stopped.

Are you afraid to hold my hand, Mister Brennan?

He stood looking at her as the moonlight lit up her face.

No ma’am, I’m afraid that once I held it I wouldn’t be able to let it go.

    She gave a small laugh.

Why Mister Brennan, I was just beginning to think that you didn’t know much about women, but now I believe that there is a romantic beneath that shy exterior.

She stood in front of him waiting for a response and he reached out and took her by the shoulders and drew her toward him…and she came willingly. The kiss was a long and passionate one and when he let her go she took a deep breath.

Well, Mister Brennan, I was right there is a romantic hiding in there.

She waited for a response as he took her hand and they walked a bit further.

    "You were right
