ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Chapter One
Beware of men named Fred .
While I sipped from my coffee cup, savoring the delicious hazelnut blend, I gazed at the words on my computer screen. Often I wonder where the hell I come up with this stuff, and then I remember.
Men.
Within minutes, my fingers flew across the keyboard as I posted thoughts to my favorite blog.
Diva Diaries is the largest online network of sexy, sassy females discussing their dating woes. No... It’s not male bashing but a place for women to rant and rave about one-night stands, blind dates... and men named Fred.
I tapped away at 60 words per minute as I gave a humorous rendition of my evening with Fred. My coworker Julie’s boyfriend, Patrick, had been bragging for weeks about a buddy of his that he thought would be perfect for me. The fact that Fred was thirty, single, and lived at home with his widowed grandmother should have had the alarms blaring, Danger, Will Robinson! But oh no, silly rabbit, I decided, what else did I have to do, except spend another evening in front of the television, watching reruns of George Lopez while stuffing my face with Ben & Jerry’s.
I should have stuck with the ice cream.
Fred arrived at my condo in a beat-up Crown Victoria, and his grandmother sat on the passenger’s side.
We had dinner at Golden Corral because it was Mother Dear’s favorite. All during the meal, she’d dominated the conversation with questions regarding my ability to bear children. When Fred pulled back onto my driveway, I’d sprung from the back seat with a quick goodbye. To my horror, he insisted on escorting me to the door and then had the nerve to ask for a kiss.
Because Mother Dear had told him so.
I felt like a fish had kissed me with his clammy thin lips as I blindly stuck my key into the lock. As soon as I managed to pry my mouth free, I scrambled into the house, secured the deadbolt, and sagged against the door. Whatever Patrick had in mind by throwing Fred and me together, it wouldn’t work.
Immediately, I reached for my cell phone and saved Fred’s number. If he’d the audacity to call me again, he’d be sent directly to voice mail.
Loser.
At twenty-eight, I was clearly starting to believe that maybe there weren’t any good men left in the world...or at least in Texas. I used to think something was wrong with me until hundreds of other Diva Diaries members co-signed my dating dilemmas.
I’m off to class.
I tore my eyes away from the computer screen and looked up at my younger sister, Tina, standing in the doorway. As usual, her clothes left very little to the imagination. The lime-green crop top with a plunging neckline proudly displayed her large breasts. Low-ride jeans exposed a narrow waist and the gold chain dangling from her pierced belly button. I had to bite my tongue to keep from commenting on her attire because my opinion always led to an argument.
Good luck with your exam. I’m sure you’ll do great,
I managed between gritted teeth.
Thanks, Lana,
she said with a hint of uncertainty, then glanced down as if she was suddenly having second thoughts about her decision to look like the campus hooker. I sighed with relief when Tina reached into her backpack, removed a black sweater, and slipped her arms inside. I hope I pass,
she commented with a hint of a frown tugging at her full lips.
I gave a dismissive wave. I have no doubts you’ll do fine.
An engineering major, chemistry came easy for Tina. While I, on the other hand, couldn’t even mix hair dye properly.
At my comment, the dimpled grin returned to Tina’s delicately smooth face. Thanks. I’ve gotta work tonight, so I’ll be home late.
Be careful, and I’ll see you later,
I replied, pleased to hear she was finally getting more hours at the greasy spoon where she worked as a waitress. What I liked most about the diner was the proximity to campus, and Tina had to wear one of those ugly candy-striped uniforms that buttoned up to the neck.
Oh yeah. It’s the little things that count.
Oh, Tina...
I began as I suddenly remembered what day it was. Could you please grab the trash and take it to the curb? The garbage truck should be here shortly.
No problem. See ya!
She tossed a rustic brown ponytail over her shoulder as she turned, and headed downstairs.
As soon as she was gone, I leaned back in the chair and released a weary sigh. Raising a teenager was hard work.
I spent five years as an assistant editor for Weekly Confessions, a small tabloid magazine in Wichita Falls. I thought I was on the fast track to a fabulous career with an expense account and a candy-apple red BMW. Instead, I kept being passed over for promotion. And when the new kid, who spent more time picking his nose than writing, was promoted, I knew it was time to leave.
The day before my twenty-eighth birthday, I was offered an opportunity to join a somewhat larger magazine in San Antonio, and I jumped at the chance. I couldn’t wait to tell my parents. Yet to my surprise, as soon as I shared my good news, they insisted I take my eighteen-year-old sister with me, saying she needed a change. They were more worried about their oldest daughter being in the big bad city alone. I was reluctant at first because living with a teenager wouldn’t be easy, but in the end, at least we had each other.
I successfully posted my blog, replied to a few emails, then hurried across the hall to my bedroom to get dressed for work. I had a big day ahead and needed to look fabulous.
I padded across the carpeted floor into a large walk-in closet and scanned my options. Today, I felt sexy, daring, and especially horny. Wasting an evening with a total loser will do that to you. Whenever I felt like this, I wore my charcoal-gray suit. Its short jacket hugged my breasts and a pencil skirt, stopped just below my knees. I
