About this ebook

Part 1 of The Sun Aegis.

Anna, a knight, lies grievously injured on the battlefield. Out of nowhere, a mysterious woman named Camille saves her, and whisks her far away.
As Camille nurses Anna back to health, Anna begins to tell Camille the story of her life - her life as a knight in a land filled with humans, werewolves, merfolk, and vampires.

Series Synopsis:
~ Once more, a knight sets forth, hoping to regain something that she had lost - justice. ~

Anna's mentor, Isabelle, had always taught her that being a knight was about justice and protecting the people.
But, that was a long time ago.
Now, a new king has been crowned, and he cares naught for justice nor his people. Ordered to do so, Anna reluctantly joins the other human knights in a campaign to massacre and drive out the werewolves, the merfolk, and the vampires - destroying the peace between the four species.
Having lost her way, Anna continues fighting for this rotten king. That is, until she fell in battle.
As she laid there, on the battlefield, an unexpected saviour whisks her far away.
Having been given a second chance, and no longer bound to that rotten king, Anna sets out to find her way back to the justice that she had lost - hoping to atone for her sins, and to protect the people from the king.

    About and Credits

    Chapter 1: The Battlefield

I screamed in pain as the spear stabbed between my plate armour, through my gambeson, and into my abdomen.

Angrily, I jabbed my sword through the open slit of the spearman's helmet.

    He screamed in pain.

We both staggered backwards, with my sword in his head and his spear in my abdomen. I watched as the spearman fell back, dead.

I looked down at the spear and tried to pull it out, but I could not find the strength to do so.

I stumbled back against an abandoned cart. Holding onto the side of it, I struggled to stay up. But, just like the blood that was spilling out of my wound, my strength was leaving me as well.

Giving up, I fell back against the cart and dropped to the ground as the battle raged around me.

Feeling the last of my strength leaving me, I closed my eyes.

I was just another body in the midst of the battlefield.

    ***

My eyes slowly opened. I could still see and hear the battle raging around me.

I tried moving my body – any part of it would do. But, nothing responded.

I felt my strength leaving again. My eyes were closing themselves, even though I fought as hard as I could to keep them opened.

    ***

I woke up to the immense pain on the left side of my abdomen. I could feel the spear, still there, deep inside my guts.

Again, I tried to move something, anything at all, but found nothing.

I was breathing heavily, my mind was panicking, and my body was useless. My strength, whatever was left of it, was waning.

Struggling to stay awake, I saw that it was night now. The battle had stopped, and I was just another body in the midst of a field of bodies. Desperately, my eyes scanned what they could, trying to find a body that was still moving – someone that could help me.

Then, my eyes found it – a lantern, a moving lantern! Someone was coming towards me!

    Quickly! I thought to myself.

As the light was approaching me, I found myself nodding off.

    ***

    I jolted awake.

Desperately, I tried to find the lantern again.

There it was, closer to me! I must have only lost consciousness for a few minutes.

I looked at the approaching figure – a woman in a black dress. She was holding the lantern, her head moving around as if she was looking for something amidst the hundreds – or thousands – of bodies strewn across the battlefield.

She didn't know I was here! Of course, how could she?

    I tried to yell out.

Help! That's what I wanted to say. Help me, please!

But, the best that I could manage were the thoughts in my mind.

I felt my strength waning again. My eyelids were starting to cover my eyes again.

No! No! No! Please… Help me!

    ***

Stay calm, girl. I am here to help.

My eyes flickered open. I thought that I had heard a woman saying that she was here to-

And there she was. The woman in black was looking at me.

    Good, you're awake, she said.

I tried to say something, but no words came out.

The woman placed a finger on my lips, Save your strength.

I watched as she moved to the spear sticking out of my abdomen. She grabbed the spear firmly, and said to me, This will hurt, but cling onto your life, and do not let go.

Before I could object, she yanked the spear out.

I screamed. Pain jolted throughout my body.

Hold onto my voice! the woman said, Hold onto your life!

I nodded as the pain seized my body. I breathed heavily as the blood began pouring out of the wound.

Do not let go, the woman said, I will start treating your wound.

I nodded through the pain and closed my eyes, trying to shut out the pain.

I felt the woman grabbing the front of my plate armour and managing to pry it off. I could then feel her ripping open the gambeson.

Prying off plate armour and ripping open a gambeson? I must be delirious from the pain. She must have used tools or something, no one could just rip apart armour like that.

Then I felt the woman place something onto the wound.

I yelped – whatever it was, I felt a stinging pain.

Eventually though, the pain – all of it – started to subside.

My breathing started to become normal again.

    "There, the worst is over.
