Dr. Michael F. Fleming taught high school biology, anatomy and physiology, and behavioral science for thirty-five years. He presented papers at the National Association of Biology Teachers, published articles in the American Biology Teacher, and authored such books as Life Sciences Labs Kit and Science Teacher's Instant Labs Kit. He is now in retirement, writing science-oriented materials.

to those who wish to improve their lot in life by their own sheer will. With that in mind, let’s begin.

From No Money to Financial Independence
An understanding of personal finance is essential to accumulating and maintaining personal wealth. Personal finance is akin to personal management of one’s assets and liabilities. Without this basic understanding, one may find the path to financial independence to be unattainable, not maintainable, or short-lived. Before one can practice personal finance, however, one must first have some money to manage. Therein lies the rub. How does one become wealthy when they have little or no money? In this chapter, we will discuss the main pathways to financial success and how one can achieve financial independence through one or a combination of these pathways.
There are four main pathways to financial success. The first pathway is via gainful employment. The second pathway is via entrepreneurship. The third pathway is via investments and the fourth pathway is via an intellectual property. There is a good chance that you may already know someone who has followed each one of these pathways to great financial success. Which pathway or pathways should you take? Before answering this question, let’s look into each pathway and get a feel for what each path would entail for financial success.
Pathway No. 1 – Gainful employment
As a group, physicians and surgeons, top executives, and lawyers are among the highest paid employees in the United States.¹,²,³ In 2017, the average physician salary ranged from $187,540 for pediatricians to $265,990 for anesthesiologists.⁴ The average chief
