Speech for the Opening of the Exhibition Architecture of Optimism. The Phenomenon of Kaunas 1918-1940 in Milano

Ričardas Šlepavičius, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania in Rome

    Ladies and Gentlemen. Dear Guests

First of all, optimism is a state of consciousness that adequately describes the situation, when in less than twenty years, from 1918 to 1940, Kaunas, the provisional capital city of Independent Lithuania, had become a European capital city from a small provincial town.

It is highly symbolic that just now, while we are celebrating the Centenary of the Restoration of the Lithuanian State, we take the opportunity to explore the architecture of this city and try to understand how the founders of our State lived at that time.

It is also symbolic that in 2022 Kaunas will become the European capital city of culture, so the temporary capital will become the contemporary capital of Lithuania. Optimism is the keyword adopted by the curators which describes how people lived and worked during this complicated period between the two world wars; it symbolically expresses their hope and sovereignty, the way to celebrate this occasion, and the message to convey to the future generations. The architecture of Kaunas shows us how we wanted to look on the European map.

Modern architecture between the two wars and also after the Second World War played a great role, it had become the memory of the former sovereignty, a symbolic window into the West, and an example for the Lithuanian architects.

Modern architecture is a source of important identity for today’s Kaunas that has now applied to join the UNESCO World Heritage.

According to the curators, the exhibition does not only tell about the city of Kaunas, but it also tells a story of rising and falling hopes, of the efforts of creative activity and of optimism, of migration, of the positioning and communality of ideas and forms, of art and freedom, of war and repressions, of the change in the forms of the past and their connection
