CHAPTER 1: REPROBATE MINDS IN THE SCRIPTURES
ACHAN Joshua 7
He is an Israelite from the tribe of Judah, he coveted in his heart to take some of the items in the spoils of the falling off of the walls of Jericho for himself alone. He was possessed so much by this greed that he ended up taking accursed things for himself.
His mind was already perverted and on the road of destruction. He decided to take for himself the accursed things, one of the signs of a reprobate mind is a selfish desire at the expense of others wellbeing.
This singular action of Achan put the whole of Israel totalling of over 500,000 men into serious trouble. Their soldiers ran and fled before their enemies. They even lost 36men. Achan’s selfishness did not bother about the loss that Israel had just suffered. He was only interested in his own progress.
He knew what he did was wrong, yet he chose to do it. He knew God would be annoyed yet he was not concerned of the aftermath of his actions on the Israelites. This is another constant attitude of a reprobate mind Joshua 7:20-21.
He took some items listed in the verse above and he hid them. He did not even have the effrontery to display his ill-gotten items. He was really bearing upon himself a very burdensome yoke.
Eventually he and all his possessions alongside the accursed things that he stole and all his family members were stoned to death. Including his oxen, asses, sheep, and his tent. His reprobate mind brought great peril to his family.
A reprobate mind makes one to do the things that will eventually ruin someone. I pray God will deliver us in Jesus Name. Amen.
REUBEN, THE FIRST BORN OF JACOB GEN 49:3
In ancient times, being the first born confers on you the heritage of all your fathers’ property. It is a coveted privileged. You are entitled to lots of possession and inheritance from your father irrespective of the number of the younger ones behind you. The first born is entitled to half of the possessions of the father. No wonder Esau cried and cried when he lost his birth right to Jacob.
The first born is described as the might, beginning of strength, Excellency of dignity and the excellence of power. Being the first born is extremely coveted and he is dedicated to God. Reuben was given over to reprobate mind. He allowed himself to be used by the enemy. He slept with the mother of his fellow siblings. He slept with the wife of his father. Gen 35:19-22.
Jacob’s most beloved wife had just died, he served for 14years to be qualified to marry Racheal. She had just died from labour complications, he was in deep and grave sorrow. He could not keep moving, he had to spread his tent beyond Edar.
Why would Reuben have a sexual intercourse with the mother of his siblings? He has been cohabiting with his siblings and even their mother, why would he allow such a thought in his heart? Why would he lay with her? Jacob was aware and he choose to be silent about it.
This is exactly what a reprobate mind can do to an individual, it make you to do shameful and unthinkable things. Imagine sharing the same bed with the mother of your step brother. I pray God will deliver us from spirit of Reprobate minds in Jesus Name. Amen.
When Jacob was about to die, he visited the actions of Reuben with a grave curse that the descendants of Rueben could not escape from. Jacob described him as unstable as water. This is a major characteristic of reprobate minds, their actions are unpredictable in the flesh. The curse placed on him by his father nullified all blessings he would have been entitled to spiritually. Gen 49vs4. Reuben would have loved another chance to be redeemed, unfortunately it was not possible. The tribe of Reuben was amongst the tribes enlisted to dish out curses in Deut. 27:13. God will deliver us from every reprobate mind in Jesus Name.
