If you asked any of them, you would learn that there’s no magic involved, they worked for it and they continually work to maintain it. You can be such a person too. The question is how?

Defining Stoicism

The stoic philosophy involves incorporating powerful practices to cope with the ever evolving challenges of today’s world. It is all about overcoming destructive emotions and developing moral virtues that help us become better human beings. This book focuses on easy, practical ways to develop the virtues of self discipline, mental toughness, confidence and productivity and finally managing jealousy and anger. These traits can help us have control over our actions, thoughts and feelings in an unpredictable world.

Stoicism is not just developing these virtues but it’s about making them a way of life; practicing them every day. Such a permanent change cannot happen overnight. As a result of years of bad habits, your brain is already wired to work in a certain way, actions and reactions happen subconsciously, that is, without having to think about it. The good news is that small deliberate changes to your behavior and continuous practice of the same can reverse your mentality.

Breaking bad habits requires time, commitment and a plan. These bad habits have to be replaced with good habits,a void cannot be left. The process is hard, no kidding, but the result is worth it. In the end, a more productive you isborn, your relationships with friends, family and colleagues improve, your self-confidence shoots up and your physical and mental health improves.

Behaviors form habits. Making small changes in your behavior can eventually lead to the big change in your bad habits. This requires persistence and a deep understanding of one’s own self. Acknowledge the bad habits you have and the limitations they have placed on your life, then make a commitment to work towards a change.

Aristotle, a Greek Philosopher, once said, We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Chapter 1: Self Discipline

What is self-discipline?

How many times have you set goals for yourself that you made little or no effort to achieve? Or did you make a decision to stop some bad habits but went on with them anyway? These portray a lack of self discipline.

Self-discipline is an inner strength that enables you to break bad habits, control your emotions, actions and reactions and stick to the decisions you have made. With this strength, you can fight impulses that are not in line with a goal you have set for yourself.

Benefits of Self Discipline

Self discipline is a requirement in the success of any area of life; financial, social, marital or physical. It helps you make rational decisions that are in line with your goals. Distractions can no longer control you and you are able to put first things first. This leads to a high success rate in everything you set out to do.

Besides having success in your endeavors, your relationships become stronger. The foundations of a strong relationship are honesty, trust, respect and commitment. These qualities are not easy to have without high levels of discipline.

It gives you command over your life. Short term rewards do not take your eyes off your long term goals.  There is a certain freedom that comes from the ability to control your impulses. It gives you fulfillment to know that you have the strength to always do the right thing.

Discipline gains you respect. People always respect people who are responsible, can keep time, beat deadlines and stick to their decisions. A person who easily sways with the current is not reliable.

Studies have indicated that people with self-discipline live a fulfilled and happier life. They are able to avoid problematic desires and are able to handle goal conflict better.

Self-discipline is not just about the achievement of a goal, it’s about developing control over your body and mind. It is the ability to make a rational decision and stick to the changes you have decided to make in your life, even in the face of temptations. Self-disciplined people have an inner strength that helps them fight temptations and defeat any urges to give up on their goals.
