Afternoons with Grandma: A Collection of Folktales from Around the World
()
About this ebook
Milos perseverance as she tries to get to the Magic Lake, Lees determination to help his fellow citizens, and Kims quick thinking in the face of a tsunami reflect conflicts faced by people around the world. Their choices come alive as examples of how choosing the right thing pays off in the end, and how common sense is far better than good grades without being practical.
There is a story for every experience in life, if we can only find it. Let Grandmas tales help you teach your children to be mindful of the experiences of others and ignite their passion for reading.

Preface
M y favorite time of day is bedtime, just before I fall asleep. When my sisters and I were children, that was story time in our home. My mother, and sometimes my father, would sit on the edge of one of our beds and tell fascinating tales of heroes and heroines and their glorious deeds. To this day, just before I fall asleep, my mind wanders into some of those stories that seem to have become entwined with real-life events happening around me.
I shared quite a few of the stories my parents told me with my children when they were small. It was surprising how easily storytelling came to me, even when I was forced to invent something on the spot. My daughters have grown accustomed to the fact that everything that happens around them is mirrored in a story somewhere. This book includes some of their favorites, as recounted by the character of Grandma to the characters of the twins, Tamara and Josh.
Unfortunately, some of these hand-me-down stories, shared from generation to generation, have been lost in the mad rush of the modern world. I have had to rely on memory for the stories I was unable to find in print. For example, some of the folktales come from books that I discovered at the local library, but these seem to have disappeared from print. Hoping to find the original version of the folktales about Milo and Li, the painter, I scoured library indexes and conducted a Google search in vain. In the end, I reinvented the stories to the best of my recollection in order to entertain my children and, hopefully, many others as well.
Children learn so much about life through stories, along with lessons about basic human decency, tolerance, honesty, bravery, and generosity. The stories in this book offer children a fresh perspective on their own experiences through folktales from all over the world. I sincerely hope these treasured stories bring as much joy to other parents and their children as they have to my family and me.
Acknowledgments
I thank my parents for encouraging me to write throughout my life, everything from an essay that won first place in a competition, to romance novels written for fun with my best friend. Their faith in my ability to write made this book possible.
I also thank my best friend, Judy Ho, with whom I spent countless hours in middle school reading each other’s short stories and laughing about them. Back in those days, we were both writing about romance. Judy will be surprised to see that my children’s stories emerged before the romance novels we always talked about!
The true inspiration behind Afternoons with Grandma came from my daughters, Nikhila and Pavitra. This book is dedicated to them with the hope that they will one day share these stories with children of their own.
