    Introduction

    With stressful routines and little to no down times in between tasks, stress dousers have become mainstream in today’s world. And over the years, a number of therapies and medications have been used for this purpose. One such common method is Massage therapy which has, over the last ten years, gone on to become one of the most popular treatments worldwide.

    The rapid rise in massage therapy has expectedly seen an astronomical rise in the demand for massage therapists the world over. Whether for babies, children, the elderly in ICUs or as part of an integrated medical treatment, massage centers are no longer exclusively found in spas and massage parlors as used to be the case. It has also been substantially used for the management of conditions in cancer patients and HIV sufferers. Hence, massage is now an integral part of a wide range of facilities in the healthcare industry. But that’s not all. In the world of sports, massage has slowly gained prominence too, so much so that it features in Olympics, with athletes from all around the world looking to ramp up their training with a healthy massage session before a race.

    While the benefits of massage therapy have not gone unnoticed, what does massage really mean? The term massage has varied over time, with different meanings attributed to it, and as such, there is no unanimous definition for this word. For example, in 1886, Thomas’s Medical Dictionary of 1886 simply stated it as:

    "Massage, from the Greek, meaning to knead. 

    Signifying the act of shampooing."

    But that was only the beginning, and a few years later, in 1994, a more in-depth definition was given by Doctor Axel V. Grafstrom who defined massage in A Text-book of Mechano-Therapy as:

    "By massage, we mean a series of passive movements on the patient’s body, performed by the operator for the purpose of aiding
