ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
With sincere appreciation to:
. . . my husband, Ken, for helping me to remember the little details and for always giving in to my wish to get another dog!
. . . my friend and neighbor in Florida, Anne Verity, who served as my editor
and whose golden, cocker spaniel, Lady, reminded us of all a dog could be. It is because of Lady that we started to think about getting another dog.
FOREWORD
As an only child whose parents moved many times because of my Father’s work, I attended 9 different schools throughout my childhood. From the age of two, my friends and playmates were usually the neighbors’ dogs! So when I started to think about writing a story, a dog story seemed a topic with which I was comfortable and familiar.
Friends
Loved but alone—a child in an adult world.
My imagination was a happy place.
When the doors were opened for outside play,
New friends arrived . . . no words,
Just wagging tails and licks for my face!
Chum
, best buddy, we travelled the yard in a pack
Of two.
Year upon year, move upon move,
Always a dog waiting for love.
Better than rabbit who just sat in his pen!
Better than crazy cat who stalked the curtain tops!
Better than raccoon who only played in the dark!
Then, a puppy, just for me . . .
A black cocker I called Peppy
.
He snarled and snapped
But never at me!
We can’t have that!
Where did you go my Peppy?
Then Fez
a neighbor’s black Shepherd,
Who followed me everywhere . . . good old pal.
Until he badly bit a human gal
Who played with me.
We can’t have that!
Good Bye old pal.
And then came Skye
and life was good.
We roamed together the Northern wood
Until another move . . . to civilization!
And so,
Skye grew old and I grew up.
And we were loved.
But no longer alone.
