One
anielle!"
Hearing my name woke me from a deep sleep. Who is it?
Danielle! You can't hide from me!
The voice was deep, but still feminine.
As my senses came to me, I realized I was still in Miazan's cave and the voice was coming from outside. Looking around, I quickly saw I was the only one in the cave. Where was Mervad? Where was Miazan? Perhaps that was Zanima calling to me. I'd never met Mervad's dragon mentor, but I wanted to believe she was kind and generous; not like the harsh voice calling to me.
Your scent gives you away, Danielle. I know you're nearby with those crystals. Bring them to me, and you may yet live.
The crystals still sat where Mervad had placed them. Memories of last night came flooding back, bringing a brief smile to my face. My first night as Mervad's wife, and it was better than I had ever imagined.
I knew someone was after the crystals, but I couldn't remember who. My memories were still fuzzy, mixed with the dreams of flying and fighting as a dragon. None of the crystals were lit, the way they did when someone was connected to them. I grabbed the crystals and flung them into my magic bag. It would protect them as well as hide them from others.
The identity charm necklace was nowhere to be found. It was a purple diamond with a charm to alter my appearance and prevent anyone from using magic to track me. I'd worn it for more than a year now, but I must have lost it last night.
The magic bag provided whatever it contained, based on need. Reaching in, I concentrated on needing to hide. My hand came back out with clothing. There was no more time, and really the charm wouldn't do much good if she could smell me.
I quickly changed before running outside to find Mervad, and hopefully Miazan and Zanima as well. If those two dragons were nearby, they could protect Mervad and me from whoever was calling out to me. I left the bag on a shelf in the cave with the crystals safely hidden inside; the safest place they could be, hidden in the bag, and protected by whatever spells Miazan had put on the cave.
There you are.
A large orange dragon stared down at me. I was beginning to wonder if you could hear me.
Who are you?
So young and ill-informed; not to mention forgetful. I am Gwrana, special envoy of King Cortiban.
She displayed eight horns on her head, though her fourth set were barely there, indicating her power and status among dragons. Only King Cortiban had more horns.
King Cortiban was the most powerful dragon in the world, the only one powerful enough to create ten horns on his head. He was vicious and cruel to humans and dragons alike, using his power to create fear among his subjects. He rewarded success with status and knowledge, while displeasing him meant death. Very few dragons could create four sets of horns, which meant Gwrana was probably a member of the Dragon Council, Cortiban's closest advisors, only sent on the most important missions.
Why do you want the crystals?
I asked. The memories were slowly coming back into place, but I remembered my need for the identity charm to hide from the very dragon I now faced.
I've already told you that, the last time we met. The crystals protected you then, but I've returned with a message from King Cortiban himself. The Crystals of Kaldonia are too dangerous to be left in the hands of a Lorac. Given the threat of the prophecy, the King will stop at nothing to take them from you, even if every dragon on Dragon Island has to come here to take them from you by force.
What's a Lorac?
The dragon's laugh shook the ground, nearly knocking me off my feet. What's a Lorac! That's a good one.
In an instant, all joviality vanished from her expression as she bared her teeth at me. Give me the crystals, or I'll eat you.
Her threats meant nothing to me. She wouldn't dare to kill me without knowing where the crystals were. Where is Mervad?
You mean the boy who protected you last time we met? Was he you're boyfriend?
He is my husband!
A wicked grin formed on her face. Without the crystals to protect him, he was easy to defeat. I roasted him alive and ate him because he wouldn't give me what I wanted. Are you ready to suffer...
A huge green blur shot from the trees and barreled into Gwrana. It took me a moment to realize that green blur was Miazan, and he was now wrestling with Gwrana. Thankfully the impact of Miazan's initial attack had thrown the two behemoths a couple hundred yards away. They thrashed and tumbled about, knocking over trees like they were toothpicks. Their roars were almost deafening.
The wrestling match continued for about ten minutes before Gwrana managed to throw Miazan off. The force of impact as Miazan hit the cliff face hiding the cave knocked me off my feet. Miazan's body went limp as he fell to the forest floor in a heap.
Still breathing hard, spitting fire with every breath, Gwrana turned to face me. No one is going to stand between me and those crystals. Not your dead husband, not your dead dragon friend, and not you. This is your last chance.
As the fierce orange dragon approached, a knight on a flying horse flew between me and certain doom. Go back to your island, foul beast! This land does not belong to you!
A large orange paw swiped at the knight, but the horse was too agile, even in the air. The knight was even quick enough to cut a foot long gash as the paw swung at him. Large drops of orange blood soaked the ground.
Gah!
Gwrana grabbed her wounded paw with the other one. How dare you stand between a dragon and her prey!
I dare because I am the prince of these lands. Be gone before my sword finds a fatal target.
He brandished his sword at the beast, as if to show the dragon's blood upon it.
Gwrana glared at him. You will pay for this insult. When I have recovered my strength, I will be back to hunt you down, as well as your little damsel in distress.
As she flew off, I saw for the first time her hide had many gashes, presumably from her fight with Miazan. Some of them were dripping orange blood worse than her paw.
While I was watching the orange dragon fly off, I should have been watching the crazy knight on the flying horse. He flew straight at me, grabbed me by the waist and flung me on his steed.
Turning my head to look behind the horse, I saw Miazan rise over the trees.
Miazan!
I screamed to myself. My heart leapt inside me, glad to see my old friend was still alive.
One wing had several tears in it and he couldn't fly properly. Green blood was also oozing from his front leg. An arrow flew from the rider, but missed Miazan by a fair distance. The horse flew faster than Miazan could in his injured condition and we slowly outdistanced him.
You're safe now, fair maiden,
the prince said. That dragon won't catch up before we reach my castle. The beasts won't dare attack us there.
The man's voice was deep, but tender.
What's going on? Who are you?
All your questions will be answered soon, when we can talk properly.
No. Answer me now!
Please, save your questions.
Frustrated at getting no answers, I considered jumping off, or trying to knock off the rider. Either could cause me to fall, and we were up rather high and moving quite fast. Unsure what else to do, I took the time to think. He found me near a battle between two dragons. If he knew I was a friend of one of the dragons, he might execute me for being a Thrall. I had to keep that a secret. But what happened to Mervad?
Gwrana said she ate him. My heart sank. One day of marriage, and the one man in this world I could stand to be with was gone. Tears flowed from my eyes as the truth of it sank into my heart. There were no humans left in this world for me to care about. Why did I ever let myself fall in love with a human? I wanted to be a dragon. Today was supposed to be the day Miazan began the long process of transforming me. I'd waited two years now, from the day Miazan first gave me his promise. My waiting was supposed to be over. How many more adventures did I have to endure?
Two
hen we reached the prince's castle, he flew over the second gate and landed in a courtyard. The prince dismounted and helped me off the horse. A small crowd gathered around.
There were whispers of, Welcome back, Your Majesty,
and, Who is she?
Finally, my 'rescuer' raised a hand and silenced the crowd. He turned to me, and removed his helmet.
The first thing I noticed was how young he looked. He couldn't be more than sixteen or seventeen. His lightly freckled face and strawberry-blond hair were quite
