The Blondie Story
Part 1: 1974 – 1982
Before Blondie, the band's visually-striking vocalist Deborah Harry (born 1 July 1945) — who was adopted at age three months — was a back-up vocalist for short-lived 1960's folk-rock group Wind In The Willows, who's self-titled 1968 LP reached #195 on the Billboard 200. The eventual pin-up spent nine months as a Playboy Bunny — and narrowly escaped serial rapist/killer Ted Bundy — before forming un-charting girl trio The Stilettoes.
Guitarist — and aspiring photographer — Chris Stein (born Christopher Stein, 5 January 1950) joined the backing band of The Stilettoes', who gigged regularly at New York's Club 82 and its somewhat-successor CBGB's. The group split in June 1974 and by August, eventual lovers Deborah and Chris formed a new group called Angel And The Snake, whom quickly ditched their name and later became Blondie And The Banzai Babies, and then simply Blondie.
A drummer since his teens, Clem Burke (Born Clement Bozews, 24 November 1954) successfully auditioned to be in the band's ever-changing line-up. He then brought along high school chum — and bassist — Gary valentine (born Gary Lachman, 24 December 1955) into the band.
The quartet laid down demo tracks in June 1975, including one named Once I Had A Love (The Disco Song). Jimmy Destri (born James Mollica, 15 April, 1954) then came on-board as the band's keyboardist in late 1975.
In 1976, the group struck up a deal with Private Stock Records and released non-charting début single X Offender — originally titled Sex Offender — in June 1976 and recorded their self-titled critically-acclaimed début album, Blondie. Second single In The Flesh became a surprise smash hit in Australia, reaching #2, and reached the Top 40 in Belgium. The album followed up the Australian charts, peaking at #14, and third single 'Rip Her To Shreds' peaked at #81 there.
A UK shared tour with contemporaries Television took place before the band returned to New York to cut their sophomore album Plastic Letters. Half-way through recording, bassist Gary Valentine was fired and replaced, part-time, with another of Clem's pals, Frank 'The Freak' Infante (born 15 November 1951). However, another new member, Nigel Harrison (24 April 1951), was soon given the band's bassist role whilst Infante was made full-time rhythm guitarist.
After re-signing to Chrysalis Records, Blondie embarked on their first headlining UK tour and a reworking of Randy And The Rainbow's Denise — to Denis — was released as the album's first single. Boosted by their début appearance on Top Of The Pops, it became their first UK hit in February 1978, hitting #2 and receiving a Silver certification. It also became their first #1 single as it rose to pole position in Belgium and the Netherlands. The album reached #10 on the Official UK Album Chart — on which it spent 54 weeks. It also broke the album chart in the band's homeland, reaching #72 on the Billboard 200. Notably, it reached #2 in the Netherlands.
Follow-up single (I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear repeated its predecessor's Top 10 status in the Netherlands (#8) and the UK (#10). In July, they hit the road as The Kink's support act.
So far, large success evaded Blondie in the US. For their next album, Parallel Lines, perfectionist Mike Chapman was hired as producer, enforcing hard work and high standards during the June and July 1978 recording sessions. First single,
