I RAN, BUT THERE WAS NOWHERE TO HIDE.
I’ve done everything I could to put the hood behind me. But every time, the hood finds its way back. I was desperate. Out of options.
Marius Rich was supposed to help.
He wasn’t supposed to dive between my legs. Wasn’t supposed to break all my walls.
Leave me quivering and begging for more.
He shattered the world that I built around myself, pulled me into a world of trouble that I never saw coming.
A world of trouble that I don’t want to come back from.
Not when he holds me with his strong hands, his hard voice burning in my ear:
“Mine.”

Chapter 1
Though the weather was still frigid at times, Shella could feel spring somewhere not too far away. The sun was clear when she stepped out of her luxury condo in North Bethesda. The daily temperatures were intermittently warm and cold, so a few of the trees were budding. She could not help it but to have intense spring fever this time of year, every year. Despite tension from the secret that Marius unloaded on her the night before, Shella Langston felt hopeful.
And why not? She was on her way to sign a contract to put on one of the biggest events of the season. It wasn't as though she had to re-invent her wheel - she had a sure-fire formula for events and ever since she had put in her bid, she had been working on the details of that night. All she had to do was give her vendors the green light and it was as good as done.
She and Marius met for a light breakfast at Cafe du Monde in Kensington. She had a thing for their chocolate bread and lemon tea. She also thought it was something she might like to share with him. She found she wanted to share lots of things with him. It was a strange new experience for herself. When she awoke that morning, Shella felt like she had awakened to the rest of her life.
Marius looked so fresh as she walked into the shop and saw him leaning against the pastry counter. He was sipping a demitasse of espresso. He sported a stylish muted marooned paisley silk cravat.
My my,
she remarked with compliment. She gave the scarf a tweak as she leaned in to kiss him. It was a slow sensual kiss that warmed her. His lips had the delicious taste of coffee and sugar. She was thrilled now that she was about to order her favorite pastry and would soon be feeding it to him.
They took a small table, sharing a bench in front of the cafe's big picture window. They engaged in flirty small talk when Marius's eyes fixed on something outside. He rolled his eyes. We have an audience.
Shella craned to look to see what he was seeing. What are we looking at?
Don't look like you're looking for something,
Marius coached. Over there in a faded yellow Charger. The old 70s car that looks like you might find it back in the day. Detective Cadillo has a number of cars. All of them meant to blend in. He drives an Esplanade and a Ford Escort.
That’s what that thing was. Well at least he drives American,
Shella joked. Well if he is on to us, we can come out of the closet.
She playfully sang, 'Let's give them something to talk about.' I say we give him a show.
Marius smiled but she could see his expression was resigned. Shella, I am here against my better judgment. I ask again. Am I selfish because I want to see you? I can not bear it if I have put you in any kind of jeopardy.
Why don't you let me worry about that. I am Shella Langston of Langston Unlimited about to hold a meeting with Congressman Linden. I threw the black tie fundraiser for Wilson House Collective that people are still talking about. I am also that tough ass little girl who grew up in Northeast. If he don't know better than to fuck with me, he will soon learn.
Yes ma'am. I think I am going to call you Southwest from now on,
he said and held the chocolate bread to her lips.
Delicious,
she cooed.
His eyes walked all over her. He had a look of utter adoration on his face. Certainly is.
Shella looked at her watch. Okay. Time to go. Shall we ride over together?
Marius hesitated. Are you nervous to leave your car unattended?
I am fine,
he assured her. He stood and cleared the empties from the table. He and Shella left in her BMW to the congressman's office.
As she rounded her car, parked out on the front curb. Shella could not resist the impulse to wave in the direction they last saw the detective. As she put her seat belt in around her middle, Marius scolded her.
You better behave, you are liable to get that sweet behind spanked,
he laughed softly. Though he laughed, Shella knew he was serious.
Rep.Congressman Linden's office was fairly understated. It was a simple suite of offices, with the congressman's office being slightly larger than the others but not by much. He was a people's politician, known for being completely accessible to his constituents for all manner of problems. The Valentine's event that he was contracting Shella's company for was a sort of rotating gig, hosted by a different business each year to express what that company is doing for the community. Congressman Linden had asked he could break protocol, and be allowed to host it.
Rep.Congressman Linden greeted Shella like he was greeting his daughter, with. a Wwarm and genuine hug.ly. Shella immediately introduced Marius. Everyone connected to the community knew the illustrious Dr. Marius Rich. Marius was the engineer of a series of programs that helped so many people in a variety of life challenges, mostly stemming from substance abuse. In true Congressman Linden style, he brought something personal and real to the conversation. He shared that he had a young family member who was having some problems staying clean. Marius pulled a card from his wallet.
"Let me know if there is something I can
