    KNOW YOUR WRITER

Dr. Denise Elaine Witherbee was born in Morehead City, North Carolina, where she could be found on the beach reading a book nearly every day. At an early age, Dr. Witherbee had an insatiable interest in languages, so it was no surprise when she graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a dual BA/MA in linguistics. She continued her academic studies by attending Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where she gained proficiency in German, Hebrew, Greek, and French. Dr. Witherbee graduated from UNC with a Doctorate of Philosophy. Now, she resides in a quiet suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband, Edward. In her spare time, Dr. Witherbee enjoys rereading the Bible in its original Hebrew and Greek, antiquing, and attending the theatre.

    A Message from the President/CEO . . .

Welcome to another quarter of edifying and insightful study. We look forward to joining you for a series of studies in God’s Word. For over 120 years, we have been motivated by the vision of our founder, Dr. R. H. Boyd, to provide you with the highest quality and most doctrinally-sound literature for the African-American church.

In July, we will look at Special Messengers Answer God’s Call. These lessons look at several examples of God’s call to His servants. We will notice similarities between these accounts. God called servants like Moses, Isaiah, and Amos for a variety of purposes.

In August, Ordinary People Answer God’s Call, drawn from the book of Acts, call us to consider how God called ordinary people like us to do His will. These stories are full of practical wisdom that helps us to live out the values of the Kingdom of God in our everyday lives.

Finally, in September, we will turn to Signs of God’s Covenants. These lessons examine the covenants God made with humanity and with the people of Israel at key points in history. These stories remind us, above all, of God’s faithfulness and of His care for all people.

Praise and thanks be to God for the blessings these lessons contain. May He bless you in your studies this quarter.

    In His Service,

    Dr. T. B. Boyd III

    President/CEO

    QUARTERLY OVERVIEW

The theme for this quarter reminds us that God continues to speak to us through God’s written word. God calls ordinary people from diverse backgrounds to make a difference. From the days of the judges to the prophets to the early church leaders, God called and the faithful answered. Beginning with Noah, God promised benevolence toward creation. Similar commitments were made with Abram, Phinehas, and Ezekiel. Ultimately, the covenant formed the foundation for the coming Messiah and salvation for the world.

    Unit 1—July

    Calling of Prophets

Unit I, Calling of Prophets, looks at how God called various prophets at different times for specific purposes. Included in this unit are the calls and responses of Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Amos.

    Unit 2—August

    Calls in the New Testament

Unit II, Calls in the New Testament, demonstrates that God continued to work through ordinary people. Their witness reminded the early church that God assures the success of those who will answer God’s call. The unit highlights the calls of Stephen, Peter, Philip, Ananias, and Paul.

    Unit 3—September

    Signs of God’s Covenants

Unit III, Signs of God’s Covenants, a four-lesson study drawn from Genesis and Ezekiel, celebrates four signs of God’s covenant. Having promised to renew the cycle of seasons, God created the rainbow as a permanent reminder of the covenant with every living thing. Circumcision was the sign of the covenant with Abraham and the Sabbath was the sign of the covenant with Israel. The last sign is the spirit-filled heart.

School: But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Director: And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

School: The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Director: Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
