About this ebook
Savannah Watkins is haunted by a dream of losing her family in a tragic car accident, which causes her to vacillate between two lives—before and after the car accident. As she struggles between realities, Jesus Christ suddenly appears to offer her unorthodox guidance. He accompanies her to the grocery store and for walks on the beach while answering some of life's toughest questions.
"Dreams of Heaven" takes you on a fantastical journey with Jesus, who leads the way through an alternate interpretation of his ancient teachings and applies them to one of our worst nightmares—being separate from the ones we love.
"It is one of those gems of spiritual literature that becomes a permanent fixture in our lives...heartfelt and deeply moving." —Hal Zina Bennett, Ph.D., Best-selling Spiritual Author

PREFACE
THE IDEA FOR THIS story came in a vivid dream where Jesus Christ appeared and showed me four scenes and nothing else. When I woke up, I knew I would write this story, but it wasn’t an easy task. I had no idea how the scenes would connect or how the story would unfold. Each writing session involved me sitting quietly, listening to the inspiration, and letting the words flow.
My gift from this process was to see how I resisted the information that presented itself. The process also involved the release of my fears. When I finally listened without hesitation, the words flowed like divine ink, covering the pages and opening my heart.
For those with a Christian background, Dreams of Heaven will defy your traditional notion of Jesus’ teachings 2,000 years ago. I can only say to you, Listen with your heart and enjoy a story interpreted through love.
Blessings,
Elizabeth M. Herrera

CHAPTER 1
The Accident
POLICE CARS AND AMBULANCES were parked haphazardly along a desolate stretch of Highway 50 near the North Carolina coastline. Flashing red and blue lights filled the night and reflected on the rain-covered asphalt. The pulsating lights were occasionally interrupted by the rescuers whose actions lacked urgency. There was no hurry. Those in the SUV were presumed dead, although the official declaration was still pending.
With rain dripping off his black metal helmet and yellow reflective rain gear, a firefighter inserted a mechanical jaw into the seam of the impacted passenger door to start the process of prying it open. He turned on the machine. Its growling metal jaws expanded. The vehicle’s mangled steel, unwilling to change yet again so soon, slowly yielded, emitting a loud high-pitched squeal. Grab it,
he instructed.
Two grim-faced firefighters took hold of the twisted metal with gloved hands, pulling with determined effort. The door finally gave way, exposing the gruesome scene inside.
The mother was slumped against the seat. Blood ran down her face. Her legs were trapped beneath the glove box. The father sat in the driver’s seat, his head pressed against the shattered side window. In the back seat, the boy and teenage girl’s arms and legs were entangled.
A paramedic checked the mother for signs of life, pressing his fingers against her neck, but, as expected, found none. He stepped back.
Police officer Nolan came over, asking the paramedic, Any luck, Jack?
Nope. Tragic. Just tragic.
The police officer solemnly nodded in agreement. I found the family dog in the ditch over there. What a shame—all the way around.
The medical examiner approached them. He was a tall older man with thinning gray hair. Without saying a word, he snapped on latex gloves, then reached inside the wreckage to feel the passenger’s limp cool wrist. Not finding a detectable pulse, he leaned in further. The woman’s glazed eyes stared back at him. He was uncomfortably close to her inside the cramped wreckage. He shone a penlight over her pupils looking for any sign of brain activity.
Suddenly, the woman arched her back, gasping for a breath.
The startled medical examiner lurched backwards, hitting his head on the door jam. He winced, then scrambled out of the vehicle. She’s alive!
he yelled excitedly.
The paramedic shifted into high gear, shouting at his partner who was unloading a gurney from the back of the ambulance, Bring the trauma bag!
CHAPTER 2
Bad Dreams
SAVANNAH BOLTED UPRIGHT IN bed, shaking from a bad dream. It took her a moment to realize she was safe in her own bedroom. Relief flooded over her, but her heart kept pounding. She glanced at her sleeping husband before getting up, grabbing her robe from the foot of the bed.
She left the bedroom, heading down the dark stairwell, reaching the living room decorated with rattan furniture that mimicked the tropics. The overhead palm-leaf fan slowly spun.
Savannah pulled open the sliding glass door. The sea breeze rushed past her, rustling the vertical blinds. She stepped outside, moving across the deck. The ocean roared. She stood by the railing, watching the waves ebb and flow under the moon’s glow. The salty mist settled over her, layer by layer, slowly creating a vaporous cocoon. Savannah
