Author

Stacy Bennett

Like many young daydreamers, Stacy Bennett grew up in a quiet New Jersey suburb, reading classic sci/fi and fantasy books and dreaming of owning a horse. She spun stories in her head about the adventures she would have - if she had a horse, if she could fly an X-wing, if she could sing like a bird. Most of those stories remained daydreams, but a writer's favorite question is "what if." Now she writes down those imaginings and calls them novels.

    Mi Carino - Stacy Bennett

    I.

When I woke from the black hole of sleep, it was the smell that hit me first. The familiar steel taint of bottled air sent a wash of déjà vu strangeness through me; and a tremor of fear. A persistent beeping nearby followed the pounding rhythm of my heart but I couldn’t place the source of the noise. I opened my eyes, squinting against the sterile white glow from the lighting modules overhead. Their cold light fell flatly off the beige curtains surrounding my bed. Or rather, my gurney.

I was in the Med Center.

Had I been sick? Perhaps there'd been an accident? That my confusion could be due to simple trauma was strangely comforting.

I called out softly, Hello? Anyone there?

No one answered which was unsettling. Usually a hub of echoing activity, the large room beyond the curtains felt as empty as space itself. The beeping changed with my anxiety. It was then I noticed the panel of monitors behind my head. My name—Sofia G. Ashworth—flashed in bright red letters above an ever-changing display of numbers and graphs.

I closed my eyes, probing the fuzzy blankness of my mind. No, not completely blank. Unsettling images lurked there; fragments that reminded me more of badly directed entertainment vids than memories.

I dismissed them as nightmares, stress dreams. Nothing like that could actually have happened to us.

    To us...

I turned the phrase over in my mind, confused by it for a moment before I remembered Rob in a flash of clarity: Lieutenant Commander Robert H. Ashworth, leader of our expedition to Kepler. Rob, the most capable Interstellar Marine in the Ark Program. Rob, my too-good-to-be-true new husband.

Then I remembered; Rob was dead.  Or so they'd told me.

    He can't be dead,
