      It should not shock me a bit but here we are. I am staring at the behemoth of a dog who is lolling on my floor pretending to be as innocent as a newborn lamb. I am here to tell you that he is not. This time the victim is my new handbag. Wait. Scratch that. My new and rather extravagant handbag. Eaten. Not just chewed on but utterly and completely consumed by the lug that is thumping his big thick tail at me and hoping that I am going to pet him and tell him what a pretty boy he is. I glare. He puppy dog eyes back at me. I melt.

      Like any other dog lover, I am now working through the list of reasons that this is probably my fault including the fact that I left the formerly lovely handbag within his reach. It is a bit of a stretch but I add that it did kind of smell vaguely like the chewies that I buy for him to keep his destructive habits in check. I set the poor boy up! Ah well.

      I pour him dry dog food and he gives me the puppy eyes again. I try one last time to glare at him and remind him that I am very angry with him. He thumps his tail and then gives me the big hairy paw of doom followed up by a doggy hug that staggers me all the way back to the sink. I connect bum to cabinet with a thud. I promise to give him a can of wet food if he just stops mauling me and he drops to the ground to wait.

      In a few minutes it is gone, the only reminder that meal time has arrived and past the lingering scent of dog food that hangs in the air for a few more minutes. Charlie belches a few times and goes to flop on the sofa. I pick up the bag of knitting, flip on the television and settle in for a few minutes of relaxation. The ladies at the knitting club are working on projects for the hospital's charity drive and I am so, so far behind. I know that they think I am just wasting time there mainly because I am almost thirty years
