      Felix and Ebony - Expecting

      I think we should do something for Daddy and Mumsie for their anniversary this year, Ebony said as she lowered her body onto the sofa. She’d just come down from putting Alex to bed.

      Felix Essien moved his laptop away from the top of his thighs onto the low table and reached for his wife’s feet, lifting them off the carpet to replace the gadget he’d just put away.

      What do you have in mind? He gently massaged the soles of her right foot.

      Ebony released a soft sigh and tipped her head back onto the padded armrest. I don’t know yet. But they need a break together, especially now that Daddy’s health has improved since the hassle with Petersen.

      Felix scratched his chin, making the stubble grate on his fingers. You’re right. It has been a difficult few years for everyone, especially Dad. And Mumsie seems to have turned a new leaf. You know what she did for Kola.

      Yes, I do. She was fantastic sorting out Sarah and ensuring Kola got full parental rights to Nike. Ebony exhaled with pleasure when he swapped the foot and started rubbing her left one. But I can’t help feeling as if things are still strained between her and Daddy. I want to see them happy, you know?

      Felix sighed, too. I know what you mean. Things haven’t been the same between them since Petersen. And no matter what’s happened in the past, I want both of them to be happy, just like everyone in our family is happy.

      A big smile lit up Ebony’s face. This is why I love you so much. You have so much empathy and connection with the people around you. But honey, do you never feel any resentment towards her and what she did to your mum?

      He leaned against the sofa and stopped rubbing her foot as he thought about the question.

      Any resentment I felt died years ago. My mother was the one she offended, and my mum forgave her. He started massaging the foot again. My mum said to me once that there’s a reason I was the firstborn, considering my father’s affair started before he married my mother. And to be honest, if my mother had lived, I would’ve likely been an only child. I would’ve hated being an only child. It’s because of Mumsie that I have Mark, Tony and even Kola in my life, and I won’t swap them for any others. So no, I don’t hate or resent her. Instead, I’m grateful to her for giving me a family I love so much.

      Ebony’s eyes misted over. Your siblings are so lucky to have you as big brother. I love you, Felix.
