      CHAPTER 1: IT'S 3 A.M.

      "It's 3 a.m. and I'm feelin' lonely," I sang (badly) while washing dishes, glad to be alone so nobody could watch the moronic way I twirled and danced between scrubbing each plate, cup and piece of silverware.

      God I love this song. And to prove it, I sang another verse, washed another dish, did another jig.

      Why was I in such a good mood? I'd no idea, unless it was because I lived comfortably far from Jerk, plus Jailbird didn't know how to find me. And he never would.

      Haha! Jerk, Jerk, Jerk. I performed another spin as I raised a dripping dinner plate, then swiveled my hips as I grabbed a hand towel to rub the plate dry.

      The stereo system wasn't playing, either. This particular music was entirely in my head.

      I'd been having some pretty intense highs and lows lately, and tonight marked the highest high so far. Too bad every day couldn't be like this. It was nice to feel carefree once in a while, even if I did look stupid.

      Chores finished, I headed into the living room to grab the remote and switch on the television.

      Instantly the TV blared a stupid infomercial, and a dizzying array of images flickered as horrible music invaded my ears. I had to rush to turn down the volume, half-frantic while I aimed the remote at the screen, yet nothing happened; therefore I pounded
